Things I have learned; chapel talks at Bob Jones College by Bob Jones( Book )

8 editions published between 1944 and 1986 in English and held by 89 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

There is plenty of homely philosophy and sound common sense in these chapel addresses, combined with a deep spirituality which makes its impression on every Christian heart. Here is a volume of "folksy" talks which the author has delivered on many occasions, that are spun out of the "old-time" religion and are full of homely advice and sharp reminders that the Christian life is a matter of working hard as well as praying hard. Thousands outside of the college walls will appreciate the reservoir of simple truths which streamed from the author's personal experiences, while motivated by a deep personal interest in his students' spiritual welfare. The author is the Founder and President of the college which bears his name -- a college which, standing without apology for the old faith and for the absolute authority of the Bible, has been going forward with rapid strides. During the last two years it points with pride to a record increase in enrollment of 50%. - Jacket flap

Bob Jones' revival sermons by Bob Jones( Book )

2 editions published between 1948 and 1951 in English and held by 55 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

These sermons were preached in a city-wide revival campaign sponsored by some two hundred Chicago area churches and Christian organizations in the Chicago Arena April 28 to June 2, 1946. Attendance reached approximately six thousand. The picture on the jacket and on the end sheets shows one of the audiences who heard Dr. Jones in this campaign. Since Dr. Jones preached the first two weeks of a five-week campaign (followed by Dr. Paul Rood and Dr. John R. Rice), these messages were laying the ground work for the campaign, reviving the saints, arousing interest, bringing conviction, and preparing the way for a blessed ingathering. Many were turned to God under the power of these messages. Although Dr. Jones was an evangelistic contemporary of R.A. Torrey, Billy Sunday, Gipsy Smith, and William Biederwolf, he is still going strong, seeing thousands saved yearly in great revival campaigns. To the vigor of his thought and the power of his preaching, the reader will testify. Dr. John R. Rice said in the introduction: "I am somewhat familiar with the printed sermons of great preachers. I heard Dr. George W. Truett many times during his prime. I have heard Scarborough, Philpott, Gipsy Smith, Sunday and Rader. He has something of the earnestness of Truett, the story-telling charm of Rader, the sweet simplicity of Gipsy Smith, the courageous convictions of Billy Sunday. I thank God that we can now have in print some of the old-time revival sermons by Dr. Bob Jones, Sr. Uncounted thousands have been moved by them, changed by them, blessed by them. May they burn anew in the heart of every reader!"--Jacket flap

"Do right!" : great messages by the eminent evangelist and founder of Bob Jones University by Bob Jones( Book )

2 editions published in 1971 in English and held by 40 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the weekly Sword of the Lord, we have published some forty-five sermons by the late Dr. Bob Jones. Most of these were mechanically recorded for this purpose. We published Bob Jones Revival Sermons, a book of principal messages given in the Chicago Arena in our joint citywide campaign there in 1946. Dr. Jones was so gifted, so compelling, so inspired in his preaching, it seems that the next generation must have the impact of his preaching. He had published two other books, Here and Hereafter and Things I Have Learned, rich, shorter comments, but the great revival preaching and his life-changing messages in conferences on revival must remain available, too. We have selected sixteen rich messages, principally those we recorded, to fill this volume. Most of them were given in Sword of the Lord conferences scattered all over America. Two of them were chapel messages at Bob Jones University. We rejoice in the evangelistic emphasis in all Dr. Jones' messages. What a ministry! How many multiplied thousands were won to Christ in his anointed revival preaching! How many thousands of college students has he sent out to win souls and follow his oft-repeated injunction, "Do right!" They will remember a hundred burning, inspired slogans like: "The best ability is dependability." "Duties never conflict." "You can do anything you ought to do." I was with Dr. Jones two months before the Lord called him Home. He was 84, and very feeble, his great voice now not much more than a whisper. He did not know all of his friends but he knew me. We sang together his favorite song, "Amazing Grace." He had often asked me to sing it or to lead the congregation in singing it. I think we were as close as brothers. I often remember a prayer Dr. Jones prayed at the close of one of his sermons in the Sword of the Lord Conference at Winona Lake in the late forties. There was a certain transparent and childlike quality in his prayers so that we could see his heart. He prayed, "Lord Jesus, I have done the best I can for You today. Other people could do better but I have done the best I can. Lord Jesus, I would surely love to see Your face. If I knew that You were in China and if I could only see You ten minutes, I would go around the world to see You, Lord Jesus." That simple devotion, that utter belief in the Bible and taking it at face value, that Christ-like love for souls and all-out effort to do the will of God -- how characteristic they were! But now he has seen the Saviour's face and heard the "Well done, good and faithful servant," and has entered into the joy of the Lord. So we publish these sermons with the earnest prayer that God may bless them to many thousands as He blessed them before, when they were givein in the living voice of Dr. Jones. - John R. The perils of America, or, Where are we headed? : sermon by Bob Jones( Book )

1 edition published in 1934 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

I desire to call your attention specifically to certain things which we have given up in this country, and these are the things which have made us. First, we have given up our old time country idea of God and decency. We have lost our old time American Sabbath. We have lost our old-time sin consciousness. All of our troubles have grown out of these three fundamental perils of this nation: a home peril, a religious peril, and an educational peril
God's program : sermon by Bob Jones( Book )

1 edition published in 1934 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

My age is not the Kingdom age; it's the Church age. That is the age in which I am living. As an intelligent Christian, wishing to do the will of God, I want to know what God's program for my age is. No Christian, man or woman, can intelligently fit into the scheme of things who does not understand what God proposes to do in this age. Which way is God going? What are his purposes for this age in which I am living? God's program for this age is to bring the lost to Jesus. The business of the church is to take Jesus to a lost world

Bob Jones' sermons by Bob Jones( Book )

3 editions published between 1911 and 2000 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Bob Jones was unique as a preacher. Neither his message nor his style was modeled after that of any other man, yet his personality was so strong and his preaching so impressive that hundreds of younger preachers were indelibly influenced by him. The most remarkable thing about his ministry is that sermons he preached half a century ago have about them a sense of instancy and scriptural application that one feels they were preached yesterday or last week. The truths he proclaimed are eternal because they are founded upon the infallible Word of God. - Back cover
