Louis XII by Frederic J Baumgartner( Book )

22 editions published between 1994 and 1996 in English and Undetermined and held by 690 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

While not in the front rank of French monarchs, Louis XII, "The Father of the People," remains an interesting and appealing figure. The events of his reign were highly significant to the future of the French state: from the unremittingly brutal Italian campaigns to Henry VIII's invasion, from Louis's disputes with the Papacy to his marriages' political complications
France in the sixteenth century by Frederic J Baumgartner( Book )

14 editions published between 1995 and 1998 in English and Spanish and held by 635 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Was France in the sixteenth century as beautiful as Fernand Braudel has described it? Or was it actually a century of "blood and iron" as Henry Hiller saw it? The truth is that the history of France in the sixteenth century embodies both of these interpretations. The glories of the French Renaissance, the great prosperity of the early decades, and the conquest of Calais and the Three Bishoprics of Lorraine all existed in counterpoint to the Italian wars, the wars with the Habsburgs, the French Wars of Religion, and the severe economic depression of the last decades of the era." "France in the Sixteenth Century is certain to become an indispensable classic for scholars and students of French history."--Jacket

Longing for the end : a history of millennialism in western civilization by Frederic J Baumgartner( Book )

19 editions published between 1999 and 2001 in English and held by 619 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Frederic J. Baumgartner explores the long, often violent, history of millennialism as it has affected Western Civilization. From the ancient Zoroastrians to the Concerned Christians of 1998, a belief in the imminent end of the present world and the coming of the new age has motivated hundreds of sects and cults, some of which have burned out in an orgy of violence to become a permanent part of Western history. Not confined to cults, millennialism has also been part of the motivation behind the Crusades, Columbus's voyages, Marxism, and the Third Reich. In this work, Baumgartner shows why the turn of the millennium occupies such a powerful place in the Western imagination."--Jacket
Behind locked doors : a history of the Papal elections by Frederic J Baumgartner( Book )

23 editions published between 2003 and 2016 in English and held by 606 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Baumgartner evokes the high drama of this event while simultaneously providing a comprehensive and rigorous history of the papal elections. Since secrecy was not heavily invoked until the twentieth century, there is a vast store of material to work from and Baumgartner uses it to detail the bickering and blatant politicking that goes on behind the locked doors of the Sistine Chapel. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, we have not yet experienced this event that transfixes the world's gaze on Rome, but no doubt we will at some point. Behind Locked Doors is a companion to have along when it happens and we watch the centuries-old transfer of Vatican power from one man to the next."--Jacket

Declaring war in early modern Europe by Frederic J Baumgartner( Book )

13 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 204 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A noteworthy development is recent history has been the disappearance of formal declarations of war. Many Americans argue that the result of this development has been to abrogate the US Constitution, which delegates the authority to declare war to the Congress. The goal of this book is to examine the history of declaring war in the early modern era up to the time when the Constitution was written in order to understand what the framers of the Constitution had in mind when gave the power to declare war to Congress. In the late middle ages, formal declarations of war were highly ritualistic acts, but by the early seventeenth century, they had changed into a practice whereby an ambassador presented a printed declaration to an enemy king. Key issues include determining how and when the medieval practices of declaring war gave way to the more modern ones, and the extent to which American framers accepted or rejected the practice of their era. While the debate over recent congressional resolutions authorizing use of the armed forces overseas has generated many publications, the wider history of declaring war has been far less a topic of study, and the early modern era has been all but ignored. This book's primary sources include ambassadorial reports, especially those from Venetian ambassadors, declarations of war, published works by noted contemporary thinkers, and several early modern literary works that depict the high drama of declaring war"--

"This collection of essays examines the emergence during the early modern era of mathematicians, chemists, and natural philosophers who along with military engineers, navigators, and artillery officers, followed in the footsteps of Archimedes and synthesized scientific theory and military practice. It is the first collaborative scholarly assessment of these early military-scientific relationships, which have been long neglected by scholars both in the history of science and technology and in military history."--Jacket
