"Fanning ... first sailed to the South Seas on a voyage for seal skins on the Betsey in May 1797. During the next 25 years he either captained or directed over 70 voyages in the Pacific and around the globe, personally visiting China, Australia, Fiji, and the Marquesas. In 1798 he discovered both Fanning and Palmyra Islands ... In 1829 Fanning was instrumental in sending out an exploring expedition under the command of Captain Benjamin Pendleton and Nathaniel Brown Palmer. It was Fanning's petition to Congress and largely his own personal efforts that led to the Congressional Act of May 14, 1836 ... authorizing the fitting out of the United State Exploring Expedition (now generally referred to as the Wilkes Expedition"--Forbes, David W. Elisha Haley correspondence by
Elisha Haley(
)
in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
Constituent correspondence sent to Elisha Haley, Connecticut's representative to the House of Representatives. Most of the letters are requests for positions (particularly Collector of Taxes), complaints about the tariff, and questions about pensions, lighthouses, post office routes, ports of entry, and government lands. Of particular interest are a series of letters from Edmund Fanning about the voyage of exploration around the world and the unfortunate sinking of the Schooner Fortitude by a number of Indians in the Northwest. Fanning consistently refers to it as the "massacre.' Included with the letters is an account of losses suffered by the owners of the vessel. On December 1, 1836, William L'Hommideau wrote to Haley asking him to present a box of very rare pears to the President. On January 11, 1837, the residents of Norwich asked Haley to help procure federal funds to improve the channel in the Thames River. In addition to the Congressional correspondence, there are three letters from family members, one from his son Giles, 1836, one from his brother Thomas in Illinois, 1863, and another letter from Giles,1863; also some financial records, most notably a large bill sent to Giles Haley
