God and the goddesses : vision, poetry, and belief in the Middle Ages by Barbara Newman ( Book )
6 editions published between 2002 and 2005 in English and held by 502 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"God and the Goddesses is a study medieval imaginative theology, examining the numerous daughters of God who appear in allegorical poems, theological fictions, and the visions of holy women. We have tended to understand these deities as mere personifications and poetic figures, but that, Barbara Newman contends, is a mistake. These goddesses are neither pagan survival nor versions of the Great Goddess constructed in archetypal psychology, but distinctive creations of the Christian imagination."--BOOK JACKET

7 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 398 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Hildegard von Bingen lived in Germany's Rhineland valley during most of the twelfth century (1098-1179). Besides being the abbess of a large and prosperous Benedictine abbey, she was a prominent writer, preacher, healer, poet, and composer who wrote nine books on theology, medicine, science, and physiology. Hildegard has been called the first medieval woman to reflect on and write about women. At the age of forty-two, HIldegard began to describe the mystical visions that she had experienced throughout her life, and in so doing she shared her theology with the world. As Matthew Fox has said, "If Hildegard had been a man, she would be well known as one of the greatest artists and intellectuals the world has ever seen."
