The society of individuals by Norbert Elias( Book )

71 editions published between 1987 and 2017 in German and English and held by 1,564 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In The Society of Individuals, Norbert Elias (1897-1990) addresses these central questions: What is the relation of the plurality of people to the individual, and the relation of the single person to all of society?" "By presenting these three related approaches written over the course of fifty years, The Society of Individuals stands as a testimony to Elias's coherence of thought and to his staying power as one of the key figures of the Frankfurt School of social philosophers."--BOOK JACKET
Silicon-germanium heterojunction bipolar transistors for mm-wave systems : technology, modeling and circuit applications( )

1 edition published in 2018 in English and held by 924 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The semiconductor industry is a fundamental building block of the new economy, there is no area of modern life untouched by the progress of nanoelectronics. The electronic chip is becoming an ever-increasing portion of system solutions, starting initially from less than 5% in the 1970 microcomputer era, to more than 60% of the final cost of a mobile telephone, 50% of the price of a personal computer (representing nearly 100% of the functionalities) and 30% of the price of a monitor in the early 2000s. Interest in utilizing the (sub-)mm-wave frequency spectrum for commercial and research applications has also been steadily increasing. Such applications, which constitute a diverse but sizeable future market, span a large variety of areas such as health, material science, mass transit, industrial automation, communications, and space exploration. Silicon-Germanium Heterojunction Bipolar Transistors for mm-Wave Systems Technology, Modeling and Circuit Applications provides an overview of results of the DOTSEVEN EU research project, and as such focusses on key material developments for mm-Wave Device Technology. It starts with the motivation at the beginning of the project and a summary of its major achievements. The subsequent chapters provide a detailed description of the obtained research results in the various areas of process development, device simulation, compact device modeling, experimental characterization, reliability, (sub-)mm-wave circuit design and systems."--
The Germans : power struggles and the development of habitus in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries by Norbert Elias( Book )

19 editions published between 1995 and 1997 in English and held by 713 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Contains an account of German social development, focusing on the 20th century and showing that the rise of the Nazi regime grew out of Germany's past. Germany's unification took place through a series of wars, during which large sections of the middle classes abandoned humanistic values and adopted militaristic and authoritarian values. In pt. 4 (p. 299-402), "The Breakdown of Civilization, " Elias states that the extermination of the Jews is an example of the vulnerability of civilization and the dangers of growth processes, in which decay can predominate. Although every war is a regression to barbarism, the Holocaust was the deepest regression; even the minimum rules of civilized conduct were not observed. People in Germany and elsewhere thought that the Nazis, living in a "civilized" society, would not act as brutally as they talked; they could not believe that the Nazis would actually act in accordance with their barbaric ideology
Mozart : portrait of a genius by Norbert Elias( Book )

15 editions published between 1993 and 2013 in English and Undetermined and held by 651 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Mozart is a brilliant study of the great composer's life and creative genius, written by one of the most important social thinkers of our time. In this haunting portrait, Elias examines the paradoxes of Mozart's short existence - his creativity and social marginality, his musical sophistication and personal crudeness, his breathtaking accomplishments and psychological despair. Using psychoanalytic insights, Elias examines Leopold Mozart's carefully honed ambitions for his son and protege. From the age of six Mozart traveled with his father, performing in the major courts throughout Europe, as the elder Mozart worked on his son "like a sculptor on his sculpture." This deep bond between father and son, which shackled as well as nurtured, provides the lietmotif of Mozart's early genius and the basis of his complicated psyche. As Elias shows, Mozart chafed at the constraints of Viennese courtly culture. Growing up in a society which viewed musicians as manual laborers producing entertainment for the court, Mozart fought for an independent livelihood. But it was not until the next generation - that of Beethoven - that the necessary conditions were created for such an existence. Vienna's aristocracy ultimately turned its back on the composer who, with mounting debts, no work and no prospect of fulfilling his innermost desires, died feeling that his life had become empty of meaning. Elias intriguingly ponders the notion of genius, seen as a complex marriage of fantasy, inspiration, and convention. Mozart was able to fuse brilliant musical innovation to an accessible artistic canon, producing wholly original, yet understandable creations. In exploring the tension between personal creativity and the tastes of an era, Mozart is a book of startling insight and discovery

The complete correspondence of Sigmund Freud and Ernest Jones, 1908-1939 by Sigmund Freud( Book )

11 editions published between 1985 and 1999 in German and held by 150 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Soon after their first meeting in 1908, Freud's future biographer, Ernest Jones, initiated a correspondence with the founder of psychoanalysis that would continue until Freud's death in London in 1939. Jones, a Welsh-born neurologist, would become a principal player in the development of psychoanalysis in England and the United States. This volume makes available from British and American archives nearly seven hundred previously unpublished letters, postcards, and telegrams, the vast majority of the three-decade correspondence between Freud and his admiring younger colleague." "These letters and notes, dashed off almost compulsively in the odd moments of busy professional lives in Toronto, Vienna, and London, in transit between meetings, or on holidays on the Continent, provide a lively account of the early years of the psychoanalytic movement and its fortunes during the turbulent interwar period. The reader is invited to share in the domestic and international news of the day, to make the acquaintance of the prominent personalities among the first generation of Freud's followers, and to witness the drama of complex rivalries and conflicting loyalties - including the personal and intellectual rupture between Freud and Jung, and Jones's unrelenting effort to maneuver politically "behind the scenes" in order to position himself within Freud's inner circle. Present in the correspondence also are the women who in differing ways touched the lives of both men and influenced their work - Loe Kann, Joan Riviere, Melanie Klein, and Anna Freud." "While charting the progress of a personal friendship, this correspondence offers glimpses of the darker events of the time - the last days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the First World War, the Russian Revolution, and the rise of Nazism in Europe. Even though on a professional level the two correspondents differed on a striking array of issues - such as the theory of anxiety, the death and aggressive instincts, child analysis, female sexuality, and lay analysis - their letters are an affirmation of the intellectual and emotional bonds between these two very different men, who, as Jones put it so poignantly in his last letter to Freud, had "both made a contribution to human existence - even if in very different measure.""--Jacket
