Scramble for the Balkans : nationalism, globalism, and the political economy of reconstruction( )

2 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 826 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Economic globalization has produced austere social jeopardy in extended parts of post communist Europe, with the former Yugoslavia and its successor states as the most conspicuous example. This state is exploited, sanctioned and nourished by authoritarian ethnocratic regimes, and misconceived Western policies may contribute to its persistence. Bringing new perspectives to bear on these crucial issues, this book is essential for all concerned with social reconstruction in the world's increasing number of complex emergencies.--Publisher description

Towards a European Islam by Jørgen S Nielsen( Book )

6 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 280 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book explores how Islam in western Europe has developed from early immigration and settlement to the point where a native generation is developing ways of being European and Muslim. England is given special attention as a case study, but as the discussion moves into the present and the future, reference is made to all of western Europe. Factors in this process not only arise from the Muslim communities themselves but also from the inherited structures of European society and state. Although the issues are complex and tense, the author is generally optimistic about the outcome.--Publisher description
Immigrant businesses : the economic, political, and social environment by Jan Rath( Book )

6 editions published between 1999 and 2000 in English and held by 257 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the past few years, a considerable number of immigrants have established their own businesses. In doing so, they have contributed in many ways to the economic development of American and European metropolitan areas. Some businesses have been incorporated into the mainstream, while others have stayed on the economic fringes and got engaged in the informal economy. The starting point of this book is that a proper understanding of these businesses is served by focusing on the embeddedness of immigrant businesses in their economic, politico-institutional and social environments from a multi-disciplinary perspective rather than confining the attention to ethnic-cultural or economic sociological aspects only

From legislation to integration? : race relations in Britain by Muhammad Anwar( Book )

7 editions published between 1999 and 2000 in English and held by 209 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Britain is now permanently a multi-racial and multi-cultural society. New economic and social relationships have developed in the last fifty years as a result of the arrival and settlement of a signifi-cant number of people from the former colonies, as workers and their families, whose colour differs from that of the indigenous white population. These ethnic minorities constitute 6.3 per cent of the total population. From Legislation to Integration? provides answers to some challenging questions. What were the objectives of race relations legislation? Is it possible to reach an agreement on all sides that legislation has indeed made a difference? What indicators could be used to assess the relative success or failure of the legislation? How should the current legislation be improved to deal with a multi-ethnic Britain in the twenty-first century? These and other questions are directly and indirectly addressed by the contributors to this book. In order to gain a wider range of views on the subject, the contributors include a politician, lawyer, political philosopher, journalist, race relations experts, academics and researchers who have achieved eminence in their own professional fields. Their distinct disciplines, unique sets of experiences, and different styles combine to provide a book that has coherence, depth and character. It will appeal to social scientists, policy makers and professionals in the relevant fields locally, nationally and internationally
Education and racism : a cross national inventory of positive effects of education on ethnic tolerance by LOUK. NEKUEE, SHERVIN HAGENDOORN( Book )

3 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 186 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book gives an inventory of factors contributing to ethnic prejudice in seven countries and the role of formal education among them on the basis of national surveys. It appears that education is crucial in all the countries surveyed and contributes to more tolerant views of ethnic and national minorities in Western European countries, Poland and the United States. The positive effects of education, however, do not always counter the negative effects of personality characteristics and conservative values on ethnic prejudice. Moreover, the negative effects of less formal education may be reinforced by perceived economical competition of ethnic minorities and thereby further bolster prejudiced views of the less educated. This indicates that formal education alone is not sufficient to change prejudiced views. Other forms of socialisation transmitting values leading to open-mindedness, and the ability to secure one's economic position have to support the positive effects of formal education as well."--Jacket
Migrants, ethnic minorities and the labour market : integration and exclusion in Europe by John Wrench( Book )

3 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 180 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book examines racial and ethnic discrimination in the labour markets and workplaces of western Europe. Scholars from ten different countries set out the experience and implications of this exclusion for two main groups: the more established second and third generations of postwar migrant descent, and the 'new' migrants, including seasonal and undocumented workers and refugees, who are vulnerable to extreme exploitation and unregulated working environments. The book finishes by addressing the implications of these issues for trade unions and employers in Europe." -- Publisher's website
