Towards a European Islam by Jørgen S Nielsen ( Book )
5 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 253 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book explores how Islam in western Europe has developed from early immigration and settlement to the point where a native generation is developing ways of being European and Muslim. England is given special attention as a case study, but as the discussion moves into the present and the future, reference is made to all of western Europe. Factors in this process not only arise from the Muslim communities themselves but also from the inherited structures of European society and state. Although the issues are complex and tense, the author is generally optimistic about the outcome.--Publisher description

Education and racism : a cross national inventory of positive effects of education on ethnic tolerance ( Book )
2 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 194 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This book gives an inventory of factors contributing to ethnic prejudice in seven countries and the role of formal education among them on the basis of national surveys. It appears that education is crucial in all the countries surveyed and contributes to more tolerant views of ethnic and national minorities in Western European countries, Poland and the United States. The positive effects of education, however, do not always counter the negative effects of personality characteristics and conservative values on ethnic prejudice. Moreover, the negative effects of less formal education may be reinforced by perceived economical competition of ethnic minorities and thereby further bolster prejudiced views of the less educated. This indicates that formal education alone is not sufficient to change prejudiced views. Other forms of socialisation transmitting values leading to open-mindedness, and the ability to secure one's economic position have to support the positive effects of formal education as well."--BOOK JACKET
From legislation to integration? : race relations in Britain by Muhammad Anwar ( Book )
6 editions published between 1999 and 2000 in English and held by 187 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Britain is now permanently a multi-racial and multi-cultural society. New economic and social relationships have developed in the last fifty years as a result of the arrival and settlement of a signifi-cant number of people from the former colonies, as workers and their families, whose colour differs from that of the indigenous white population. These ethnic minorities constitute 6.3 per cent of the total population. From Legislation to Integration? provides answers to some challenging questions. What were the objectives of race relations legislation? Is it possible to reach an agreement on all sides that legislation has indeed made a difference? What indicators could be used to assess the relative success or failure of the legislation? How should the current legislation be improved to deal with a multi-ethnic Britain in the twenty-first century? These and other questions are directly and indirectly addressed by the contributors to this book. In order to gain a wider range of views on the subject, the contributors include a politician, lawyer, political philosopher, journalist, race relations experts, academics and researchers who have achieved eminence in their own professional fields. Their distinct disciplines, unique sets of experiences, and different styles combine to provide a book that has coherence, depth and character. It will appeal to social scientists, policy makers and professionals in the relevant fields locally, nationally and internationally
