The Spanish Republic and Civil War by Julián Casanova( )

25 editions published between 2007 and 2014 in Spanish and English and held by 1,106 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Spanish Civil War has gone down in history for the horrific violence that it generated. The climate of euphoria and hope that greeted the overthrow of the Spanish monarchy was utterly transformed just five years later by a cruel and destructive civil war. Here Julián Casanova, one of Spain's leading historians, offers a magisterial new account of this critical period in Spanish history. He exposes the ways in which the Republic brought into the open simmering tensions between Catholics and hardline anticlericalists, bosses and workers, Church and State, order and revolution. In 1936 these conflicts tipped over into the sacas, paseos and mass killings which are still passionately debated today. The book also explores the decisive role of the international instability of the 1930s in the duration and outcome of the conflict. Franco's victory was in the end a victory for Hitler and Mussolini and for dictatorship over democracy."
A short history of the Spanish Civil War by Julián Casanova( )

23 editions published between 2012 and 2019 in English and held by 919 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The years of the Spanish Civil War filled twentieth-century Spain with hope, frustration and drama. Not only did it pit countryman against countryman, and neighbor against neighbor, but from 1936-39 this bitterly contended struggle sucked in competing and seemingly atavistic forces that were soon to rage across the face of Europe, and then the rest of the world: nationalism and republicanism; communism and fascism; anarchism and monarchism; anti-clerical reformism and aristocratic Catholic conservatism. The "Guerra Civil" is of enduring interest precisely because it represents much more than just a regional contest for power and governmental legitimacy. It has come to be seen as a seedbed for the titanic political struggles and larger social upheavals that scarred the entire twentieth century. In elegant and accessible prose, Julián Casanova tells the gripping story of these years of anguish and trauma, which hit the country with a force hitherto unknown at any time in Spain's history. Charting the most significant events and battles alongside the main players in the tragedy, he provides answers to some of the pressing questions (such as the roots and extent of anti-clerical violence) that have been asked in the seventy years that have passed since the painful defeat of the Second Republic."--Publisher's website
Anarchism, the republic, and civil war in Spain, 1931-1939 by Julián Casanova( Book )

37 editions published between 1997 and 2014 in Spanish and English and held by 372 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The book demonstrates how research on interferon led to new clinical definitions of cancer and a new rationale for therapeutic use of the drug. 'Interferon' provides insight into the development of one of the most controversial drugs of our time. It enhances our understanding of how medicine manufacture and marketing all played a part in pushing back the boundaries of research, from the post-penicillin era to the genetics revolution in medicine" "This study is of particular interest to undergraduates in the fields of History of Medicine, Pharmacology, Medical Genetics and History of Science."--Jacket
Twentieth-century Spain : a history by Julián Casanova( Book )

12 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 351 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This is a much-needed new overview of Spanish social and political history which sets developments in twentieth-century Spain within a broader European context. Julián Casanova, one of Spain's leading historians, and Carlos Gil Andrés chart the country's experience of democracy, dictatorship and civil war and its dramatic transformation from an agricultural and rural society to an industrial and urban society fully integrated into Europe. They address key questions and issues that continue to be discussed and debated in contemporary historiography, such as why the Republic was defeated, why Franco's dictatorship lasted so long and what mark it has left on contemporary Spain. This is an essential book for students as well as for anyone interested in Spain's turbulent twentieth century"--

17 editions published between 2002 and 2010 in Spanish and held by 151 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

6 editions published in 2015 in Spanish and held by 85 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Europa contra Europa, 1914-1945 by Julián Casanova( Book )

9 editions published between 2011 and 2014 in Spanish and Undetermined and held by 72 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

16 editions published between 2013 and 2017 in Spanish and English and held by 72 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

La Guerra Civil española by Paul Preston( Book )

5 editions published in 2008 in Spanish and held by 51 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Paul Preston is the world's foremost historian of Spain. This surging history recounts the struggles of the 1936 war in which more than 3,000 Americans took up arms. Tracking the emergence of Francisco Franco's brutal (and, ultimately, extraordinarily durable) fascist dictatorship, Preston assesses the ways in which the Spanish Civil War presaged the Second World War that ensued so rapidly after it. The attempted social revolution in Spain awakened progressive hopes during the Depression, but the conflict quickly escalated into a new and horrific form of warfare. As Preston shows, the unprecedented levels of brutality were burned into the American consciousness as never before by the revolutionary war reporting of Ernest Hemingway, John Dos Passos, Herbert Matthews, Vincent Sheean, Louis Fischer, and many others. Completely revised, including previously unseen material on Franco's treatment of women in wartime prisons, The Spanish Civil War is a classic work on this pivotal epoch in the twentieth century
