Plant invaders : the threat to natural ecosystems by Quentin C. B Cronk( Book )

9 editions published between 1995 and 2013 in English and held by 875 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A practical guide to the protection and management of ecosystems against invasions by non-indigenous plant species. The authors seek to offer an accessible account of the subject and how to protect natural habitats. The majority of countries suffer from invasive plants and there are case studies from North America, Europe, Australia, South and South East Asia and the Pacific and Atlantic islands. There is also a list of invasive species, with their countries of origin and regions of introduction
Agricultural expansion and tropical deforestation : poverty, international trade and land use by Solon Barraclough( )

1 edition published in 2000 in English and held by 627 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Drawing on empirical data from case studies ranging over three continents, Barraclough and Ghimire show that the focus of analysis must be applied as much to the misguided policies of national and regional authorities as to the forces of trade and globalization. Furthermore, a critical perspective needs to be adopted that incorporates historical and contextual factors such as land tenure and farming systems." "Agricultural Expansion and Tropical Deforestation puts the case for the need to seek solutions in far-reaching institutional and policy reforms at local, national and international levels, if the real challenges of tropical deforestation are to be tackled effectively. It is an ideal reference work for researchers, policy makers, conservation and development NGOs and anyone interested in issues of trade, globalization and the politics of land and the environment."--Jacket
Caring for the earth by D. A. (Editor) Munro( Book )

28 editions published between 1991 and 2013 in English and held by 552 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The World Conservation Strategy stressed the interdependence of conservation and development, gave currency to the idea of sustainable development and made the point that unless the vitality and productivity of the planet are safeguarded, the future for humanity is at risk. Its impact was immediate and worldwide. 'Caring for the Earth' builds on all that has been learned in the last decade about the complexity of the problems and shows how radical and far-reaching are the actions and objectives needed to meet them
The root causes of biodiversity loss by ALEXANDER. STEDMAN-EDWARDS, PAMELA. MANG, JOHANNA WOOD( Book )

2 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 516 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This text addresses the findings of the World Wide Fund's Root Causes Project, a multiyear study of 10 biospheres in 10 countries with the purposes of understanding and changing the dynamics and factors that drive the loss of biological diversity. Cases studied are Brazil's Cerrado region, Cameroon's bushmeat and wildlife trading environment, China's southwestern forests, the Danube River Basin, India's Chilika Lake, Mexico's Calakmul region, the mangroves of Pakistan, the Philippines' Cebu, Negros, and Palawan, the Rufiji, Ruvu and Wami mangroves in Tanzania, and Vietnam's northern and central highlands
Global action for biodiversity : an international framework for implementing the convention on biological diversity by Timothy M Swanson( Book )

4 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 276 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"At the Rio Earth Summit in 1992, the nations of the world adopted the Convention on Biological Diversity. Since then, over 160 countries have ratified the Convention, three Conferences of the Parties have taken place and a permanent secretariat has been established. Despite this, there remains a lot of uncertainty and even controversy about what the Convention was intended to accomplish and how it was to do so." "This book, published in association with IUCN - The World Conservation Union, sets out to answer some of these questions by recounting the history of the movements leading up to the Convention, but especially by analysing the forces giving rise to the problem. It provides a specific set of policy prescriptions intended to facilitate the development of institutions and obligations within the international community which will give real effect to the aspirations of the Convention, and to ensure that it has some real effect at ground level." "The book is an excellent introduction to a very topical debate, and a valuable reference point for conservationists, policy makers and students of development studies, environmental studies, environmental policy and conservation biology."--Jacket
The Conservation of medicinal plants : proceedings of an international consultation, 21-27 March 1988 held at Chiang Mai, Thailand by Olayiwola Akerele( Book )

8 editions published between 1991 and 2009 in English and held by 272 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Nearly all cultures, from ancient times to today, have used plants as a source of medicine. In many developing countries, traditional medicine is still the mainstay of health care and most of the drugs and cures used come from plants. In developed countries many people are turning to herbal remedies. With this widespread use has come the assumption that plants identified as having medicinal qualities will be available on a continuing basis. However no concerted effort has been made to ensure this and in the face of the threats of increasing demand, a vastly increasing human population and extensive forest destruction, there can be no guarantee that we will continue to benefit indefinitely from this valuable resource. In light of this situation the World Health Organisation held a meeting in 1988. This book is the outcome of that meeting, detailing in a series of papers by leading experts the problems of which need to be addressed, the existing experiences from a range of countries and the future direction which must be taken to ensure the conservation of the world's medicinal plants
Centres of plant diversity : a guide and strategy for their conservation by World Wide Fund for Nature( Book )

Partnerships for protection : new strategies for planning and management for protected areas by Sue Stolton( Book )

1 edition published in 1999 in English and held by 209 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Taking into consideration the fact that many ecosystems are under-represented in protected areas of land and water and traditional management methods have often been ineffective, this volume describes how improvements can be made. Specifically, it explores ways of ensuring that all major ecosystems are safeguarded, and innovative approaches to conservation involving individuals, communities, companies and governments. The essence of the approach taken in the text is to build partnerships with those who have a stake in the care of land and water resources
People, plants, and protected areas : a guide to in situ management by John D Tuxill( Book )

2 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 199 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Conservation of plant resources is often focused on seed banks and botanical gardens. However, the two authors of this volume present a comprehensive conservation strategy that complements this ex-situ approach with practical guidance on in-situ management and conservation of plant resources. The book aims to facilitate better management of protected areas and to illustrate new approaches to conservation of plants within their landscapes. It draws on concepts from forestry, the agricultural sciences, anthropology, ethnology and ethnobotany and should be useful to practitioners, academics and p
Future nature : a vision for conservation by W. M Adams( Book )

3 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 189 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The countryside is changing faster than ever. Fifty years of conservation achievements in the UK are now being confronted by a new complexion of economic forces that are driving change in the countryside. At the same time new ideas in conservation are altering the role that conservation is being asked to play in negotiating the transition from past to future. This revised edition of Bill Adams classic work Future Nature tackles the new challenges in the countryside and wildlife conservation head-on through a new Introduction and Postscript with updated arguments about naturalness and our social engagement with nature, and complemented by a new Foreword by Adrian Phillips. Concepts such as biodiversity and sustainability, and changes in our understanding, appreciation and concern for nature, offer unprecedented opportunities. Bill Adams explores the scientific, cultural and economic significance of conservation. He argues that conservation must move beyond the boundaries of parks and reserves to embrace the whole countryside. The importance of conservation for the future is enormous. It holds the potential to create new spaces for nature, both in the landscape and in our lives and imaginations. This factual, beautifully written and thought-provoking book offers a fundamental reassessment of conservation, its importance, and how to achieve it. Published with BANC
