Building a new foundation for the ocean sciences : the National Science Foundation and oceanography, 1951-1965 by David K Van Keuren( Book )

1 edition published in 2000 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The organization of the National Science Foundation in 1950 gave it a late start on supporting American science. It survived as a poorly funded sister to the Office of Naval Research until the late 1950s, when Sputnik opened up the federal coffers for science support and education. This was particularly true in the ocean sciences, where NSF financial commitment to research support remained extremely limited, until the lobbying of the National Academy of Sciences' Committee on Oceanography, combined with the results of Sputnik, led to a dramatic new commitment of resources. One of the earliest major recipients of NSF resources in oceanography and the earth sciences was Project Mohole. Mohole gave the Foundation the opportunity to take a leadership role in oceanography and the earth sciences, although internal squabbles among supporters, along with projected cost over-runs, eventually led to a funding cut-off by Congress in 1966. However, the NSF's leadership role in the ocean sciences was by then well established."

in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This collection contains material related to four generations of the family of Dr. Frank Birch Easton, Sr. (1878-1948), of Craftsbury, Vermont. The first series contains genealogical reports on Frank Birch Easton, Sr. and his wife Della May Donnocker, both completed by Ruth Donnocker, circa 2001, as well as a pedigree chart for Dr. Easton. The photographs in this series include a picture of Frank and Della from the 1930s with six children and a picture of the family homestead in Craftsbury. The photographs have been identified by Frank Easton, Jr. The second series contains information on Frank Easton, Jr., and his brother Roger, a scientist and inventor. Materials on Frank Jr. are mostly photographs and a summary of his work history written in 1960 when he was applying for a job. Photographs show Frank as a high school basketball player at Craftsbury Academy, as a military and civilian pilot, and on hunting trips. Material about Roger documents his involvement with the development of the country's GPS capabilities, and includes a transcript of an interview with Dr. David K. Van Keuren in 1996 about his career at the Naval Research Laboratory. The Easton family was twice connected with major news events, first in 1913 when Charles D. Easton, brother of Frank Sr., wed Titanic survivor Margaret Hays who had cared for two young boys who were also survivors. The second news event concerned a daughter of Frank, Jr., Paula (Easton) Stanard (1948-1999), of West Windsor, Vermont, who was murdered by her son Laird Stanard (1981- ) in 1999. The collection also contains general information about Craftsbury in the form of newspaper clippings assembled by Frank Easton, Jr
