Dickens called this organization the PICKWICK CLUB, named after his central character, one Samuel Pickwick. He and his friends set out on a cross-country journey, and through a series of innocent misunderstandings, they wind up entangled in a comedy of errors that builds to monumental proportions. The tone of the tale turns serious when Pickwick is briefly consigned to a debtor's prison, a place which only Dickens could describe in the full measure of its hopelessness and horror.--

This exciting story is based on one of the most glorious exploits of World War II-the combined operational raid on March 28th 1942 on the Atlantic port of St. Nazaire. In particular, it is the adventures of a ship and her crew from the time they come together in the grim, darks days of 1940 until their ultimate triumph and parting. Together they form the spearhead of the attack which results in the destruction of the lock-gates of an important enemy-held base. The ship, HMS Ballantrae, affectionately known as Gift Horse is one of the many over-age US destroyers, transferred to Britain in return for the lease of certain naval and air bases. Although she has come out of honorable retirement at a time of dire necessity, her many failings are, at first, a source of constant irritation and embarrassment to her crew. Gradually, however, they begin to like her and by the time she is chosen for her last and most glorious engagement, there is no-one who is not proud to be a member of her crew. Lieutenant Commander Fraser leads the men who sail and fight with her and, after seven reluctant years "on the beach," Fraser has at last persuaded the Admiralty to give him a ship of his own again. The ratings who serve under him represent a very fair cross section of the Royal Navy in war. But it is the old "four stacker" destroyer who is the real heroine of this human and dramatic film
