Alfarabi, Avicenna, and Averroes on intellect : their cosmologies, theories of the active intellect, and theories of human intellect by Herbert A Davidson( )

25 editions published between 1992 and 2010 in English and held by 2,181 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A study of problems revolving around the subject of intellect in the philosophies of Alfarabi (d. 950), Avicenna (980-1037), and Averroes (1126-1198), this book pays particular attention to the way in which these philosophers addressed the tangle of issues that grew up around the active intellect. Davidson starts by reviewing discussions in Greek and early Arabic philosophy that served as the background for the three Arabic thinkers. He examines the cosmologies and theories of human and active intellect of the three philosophers and covers such subjects as the emanation of the supernal realm from the First Cause, the emanation of the lower world from the transcendent active intellect, stages of human intellect, illumination of the human intellect by the transcendent active intellect, conjunction of the human intellect with the transcendent active intellect, prophecy, and human immortality. Davidson traces the impact of the three philosophers on medieval Jewish philosophy and Latin Scholasticism. He shows that the later medieval Jewish philosophers and the Scholastics had differing perceptions of Averroes because they happened to use works belonging to different periods of his philosophic career. This book will be of interest to the student and scholar in medieval philosophy, the history of philosophy, and medieval culture
Moses Maimonides : the man and his works by Herbert A Davidson( )

29 editions published between 2004 and 2010 in English and held by 1,598 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Moses Maimonides, rabbinist, philosopher, and physician, had a greater impact on Jewish history than any other medieval figure. This book offers a fresh look at every aspect of Maimonides' life and works: the course of his life, his education, his personality, and his rabbinic, philosophical, and medical writings. At a number of junctures, Herbert A. Davidson points out that information about Maimonides which has been accepted for decades or centuries as common knowledge is in actuality supported by no credible evidence and often, more disconcertingly, is patently incorrect. Maimonides' diverse writings are frequently viewed as expressions of several distinct personas, uncomfortably and awkwardly bundled into a single human frame; this book treats his writings as expressions of a single, integrated, albeit complex, mind."--Jacket
Maimonides the rationalist by Herbert A Davidson( )

15 editions published between 2009 and 2015 in English and held by 935 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The chapters in this volume focus on the philosophical aspects of Maimonides' work: the religious obligation to study philosophy, Maimonides' knowledge of the philosophical literature, and certain fundamental issues where philosophy and religion intersect."--ECIP summary
Proofs for eternity, creation, and the existence of God in medieval Islamic and Jewish philosophy by Herbert A Davidson( Book )

11 editions published in 1987 in English and held by 469 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The central debate of natural theology among medieval Muslims and Jews concerned whether or not the world was eternal. Opinions divided sharply on this issue because the outcome bore directly on God's relationship with the world: eternity implies a deity bereft of will, while a world with a beginning leads to the contrasting picture of a deity possessed of will. In this exhaustive study of medieval Islamic and Jewish arguments for eternity, creation, and the existence of God, Herbert Davidson provides a systematic classification of the proofs, analyzes and explains them, and traces their sources in Greek philosophy. Throughout the study, Davidson tries to take into account every argument of a philosophical character, disregarding only those arguments that rest entirely on religious faith or which fall below a minimal level of plausibility"--Publisher description

The Kuzari = Kitab al Khazari : an argument for the faith of Israel by Judah( Book )

3 editions published in 1971 in Latin and Hebrew and held by 23 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Kuzari by Judah HaLevi, the Sephardic philosopher and poet, is one of the most important statements of Jewish thought from the last thousand years. It was written as an introduction to Judaism in the form of a dialogue, primarily between the king of the Khazars and the rabbi who explains Judaism to him. The King was exploring the possibility of converting to a monotheistic religion, and the question was whether Judaism, Christianity or Islam would be his choice. The King called representatives of each of the three religious traditions to explain their central beliefs and practices"--
