4 editions published between 1949 and 2012 in English and held by 684 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A musical comedy storyline was fashioned from Bernstein and Robbins' modernistic ballet, Fancy Free, in which a trio of sailors dance away their 24 hour shore leave in New York. Although a number of songs were added for the film, On the Town remains a wonderfully energetic dance-oriented folk musical. If not the first to use locations, it is the the first musical to animate them, most notably in the New York, New York number. Kelly has claimed that On the Town put the dissolve in the musical out of style and replaced it with quick cutting. Also available on VHS in package entitled 'Hollywood Musical: the fairytale musical and the folk musical' and on laserdisc called 'The Gene Kelly Collection'
