The unpainted landscape by Simon Cutts( Book )

13 editions published in 1987 in English and held by 182 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

« When we think of the landscape and of an art derived from it, we may bring to mind first of all the activity of drawing and painting. The image is redolent, of a solitary wind-blown figure in front of an easel. It is almost as inherent a cliché as the garret or attic for the isolate artist in an urban parallel. With the selection presented here, we hope to show the work of some artists who, whilst working with the landscape, do so in another way. They do not try to reproduce the appearance of the landscape by way of painted effects. The intrinsic correspondance between the devices of painting and the imposing scene in front of us, as in the traditions and effects of watourcolour, has been central to our experience of art. Nonetheless, in the period of the last twenty years, some artists have established new procedures for an art of landscape, and have chosen to work with wider means at their disposal. They have used the recording photograph, the idea of time and sequence to make a journey, the notion of change and substitution in a place. In fact they have re-examined the composition of an art related to landscape. »--
Some forms of availability : critical passages on the book and publication by Simon Cutts( Book )

6 editions published between 2004 and 2007 in English and held by 112 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Assembles speculative essays, reviews, interviews, and collected statements and texts by Simon Cutts, longtime publisher of Coracle Press. Its concern is with the recent history of the book and the idea of publication arising from its occurrence in modernism, the small presses and the developing artists book. At the same time it introduces some fo the ephemera produced by Coracle over the years, the Polemical Postcards, and a facsimile case history of the distribution of one such understated work. These may all contribute to a new optimism for the availability of the small publication and for its sense of achievement within a finite means

The translated latrine inscriptions of the Palazzo Davanzati by Simon Cutts( Book )

7 editions published between 1993 and 2015 in English and held by 30 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Palazzo Davanzati in Via Porta Rossa, Firenze, was built around the middle of the 14th century. It contained not only one of the first sewage systems, but also perhaps the first graffiti in the form of inscription on the lavatory walls. These may have been produced by citizens, who whilst waiting their turn to be assessed for land valuation, killed time and found an outlet for their impatience by writing on the walls. All of the inscriptions were made by quite unskilled hands, often devoid of the most rudimentary notion of spelling. The words also prove difficult to decipher both because they are at times barely distinguishable from the plaster surface, and because they have often been superimposed over each other. On occasions, as a result of an unusual character being included in the word, doubts are raised as to whether a number of them have been adulterated by later additions. A series of dots indicate that the phrase would certainly have gone on or that there are barely perceptible traces of words on the plaster surface which are actually legible"--Afterword

Letterpress : new & material poems by Simon Cutts( Book )

1 edition published in 2013 in English and held by 27 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"As a visual artist, Simon Cutts is a poet, and as a poet he is a visual artist. This is no glib turn of phrase, but a lived reality insofar as he conceives how one artistic practice can show the ways of opening the other. For some time now he has insisted that the book is not merely (or simply) a vehicle for poetry, but is itself part of a poem’s form. He extends the idea of a poem being a field of dynamic action beyond the boundaries of the page so as to encompass the book as whole. To read Letterpress is to become a participant in its total and encompassing range." -- inside front cover
