"The film takes place in 1848, when two wagon trains--one led by Jesse Wingate, the other by Will Banion--as they travel from Kansas City, over the Oregon Trail, to destinations in California and Oregon. As the wagons make their way over the tortuous trail, many obstacles are encountered--the crossing of the Platte River, an Indian attack, and a prairie fire. On the way to California, human stories unfold--the most prominent of which revolves around Will and Molly Wingate. Molly's fiancé, Sam Woodhull, out to discredit Will, succeeds in having Will and his wagons banished from the train and head off to the California gold fields. By that point, Molly has fallen in love with Will and sends Jackson to find him."--Paul Brenner
The merry widow by Erich von Stroheim( Visual )

4 editions published between 1925 and 2010 in 3 languages and held by 63 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Although plagued by strife both on and off the set, The Merry Widow was one of the few Stroheim films to be released substantially as he intended. Ironically it was a great success with the critics and the public. Characteristically, Stroheim made the original material his own. The libretto of the operetta provided the bare bones of only the final third of the film. While the theme of true love thwarted by Ruritanian class barriers, and then redeemed, is still there, the characterisation is unmistakably Stroheim's. He split the character of Prince Davilo (Gilbert) whom he originally planned to play himself, into two. While both are assured in their aristocratic lineage and their womanising, Davilo is sympathetic, Mirko is his sinister shadow. The lecherous old Baron Sadoja is explicitly characterised as a foot fetishist. Sonia, the farmer's daughter in the original, becomes Sally O'Hara, vaudeville dancer, in deference to Mae Murray's limited talents
