When she wakes up, she discovers that she's wearing a wedding ring, and, a few weeks later, that she's pregnant. But who and where is the husband and father? Confiding only in her younger-but-wiser, wisecracking sister Emmy, she plans to get Norval to marry her. Norval is 4-F because of his extremely nervous condition, but he desires only two things in life: Trudy and to be in the army. Alphaville by Jean-Luc Godard( Visual )

56 editions published between 1965 and 2019 in 7 languages and held by 223 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this amalgam of sci-fi comic strip and film noir, tough American intergalactic secret agent, Lemmy Caution, goes on a mission to discover the fate of his predecessor in computer-run Alphaville, which recreates the legend of Orpheus and Euridyce (see Cocteau's Orphee). Coutard's photography of nocturnal Paris, 1965, creates Godard's sci-fi dystopia. Long bureaucratic corridors are Kafkaesque labyrinths of power at the centre of which lies death. The film is built on contrasts - between straight lines and circles, Max Steiner-like romanticism and discordant noise, between the super ego (Alpha 60) and the suppressed id (Lemmy). Lemmy is a reference to the popular arts where human qualities linger in a dehumanised world. Lemmy finds himself in a dictatorial computer-run society dedicated to technology where love and poetry are banned
