Training of existing workers : issues, incentives and models by Giselle Mawer( Book )

6 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 17 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Continuing changes in work, work organisation, technologies and market demands both locally and internationally have led to proportionate demands for ongoing skill development at all levels of the workforce. At the same time, the pool of new workforce entrants is set to diminish, necessitating a dual strategy of new entrant training and continuous training of existing workers. This study set out to investigate issues associated with the training of existing workers and their implications for the labour force, industry, employers and the vocational education and training (VET) system. It examines three industry contexts - retail, manufacturing, and building and construction - where little accredited training occurs, and the reasons for this. It also seeks to identify the driving forces and most useful approaches to learning and training from both employer and employee perspectives. [p.6]
Hobson's conduit: the new river at Cambridge commonly called Hobson's river by W. D Bushell( )

3 editions published between 1938 and 2012 in English and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

It is a peculiarity of Cambridge that in one of the principal streets, Trumpington Street, there is a runnel of fresh water, called Hobson's Conduit, on either side of the road (a similar stream in St Andrew's Street was covered over in the 1990s.) These streams form part of a system of water supply named after Thomas Hobson (1545-1631), the Cambridge carrier, from whom we get the expression 'Hobson's Choice', and for who the young John Milton wrote two verse epitaphs, reproduced in this work. For 250 years, Hobson's Conduit provided the principal supply of drinking water for the centre of the city, after Andrew Perne (1519-89), Vice-Chancellor of the University, persuaded a number of patrons, including Hobson, to subscribe towards the project. First published in 1938, this history of Cambridge's ancient urban watercourse was written by W. D. Bushell, one of the trustees of the Hobson's Conduit Trust
Selected works of Yakov Borisovich Zeldovich by Jakov Borisovič Zelʹdovič( )

3 editions published between 1993 and 2017 in English and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is the second volume of a two-volume collection of over 100 articles spanning half a century of work by the late Soviet scientist Yakov Borisovich Zeldovich. The breadth and depth of Zeldovich's work is staggering. Author of over twenty books and more than 500 scientific articles, he made fundamental contributions in chemical catalysis and kinetics, combustion and the hydrodynamics of explosive phenomena, nuclear chain reactions and nuclear energy, the physics of elementary particles, and the large-scale structure of the universe and cosmology. The importance of this collection lies not only in its documentary value as a collection of key scientific works by a man of genius. Zeldovich himself considered his most valuable role to be that of a teacher, to convey to young scientists the how of science. The author of several excellent textbooks on topics ranging from elementary mathematics to advanced methods of mathematical physics, he saw this collection of works, enlarged from the original Russian edition, as a contribution to that end. Commentaries by the author and the editors are included with each paper serving to enhance both the historical and the pedagogical value of this edition. The passing of Yakov Borisovich Zeldovich in December, 1987, was a loss felt deeply by scientists all over the world. This collection of his works serves as a tribute to him as a man, a scientist, and, above all, a teacher.Originally published in 1993.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Dusting off the shelves : getting the most value out of vocational education and training equity resources by Giselle Mawer( Book )

2 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report provides an analysis of data gathered from vocational education and training (VET) policy-makers, industry representatives, resource development managers and practitioners about their experiences and views on the uptake and implementation of equity learning resources. These resources are aimed at supporting trainers in teaching their students. A range of enablers and barriers to the uptake and implementation of the resources in the VET sector were identified. A key finding is that few equity resources appeared to be widely used. The issue of uptake lies not with the quality of the resources but with the processes surrounding their development
Selected works of Yakov Borisovich Zeldovich by Â. B Zelʹdovič( Book )

5 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Selected Works of Ya. B. Zeldovich is a two-volume collection of over 100 articles spanning half a century of work by the late Soviet scientist Yakov Borisovich Zeldovich. The importance of this collection lies not only in its documentary value as a collection of key scientific works by a man whose genius was characterized by the Soviet physicist Andrei Sakharov as "probably unique." Zeldovich himself considered his most valuable role to be that of a teacher, to convey to young scientists the how of science. The author of several excellent textbooks on topics ranging from elementary mathematics to advanced methods of mathematical physics, he saw this collection of works, enlarged from the original Russian edition, as a contribution to that end. Here one can see the scientific method at work--and all the enthusiasm, the breakthroughs, and the mistakes associated with real scientific endeavor. Commentaries by the author and the editors are included with each paper serving to enhance both the historical and the pedagogical value of this edition. Originally published in 1992.
