The Dust Bowl : an illustrated history by
Dayton Duncan(
Book
)
8 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 1,342 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
For almost a decade, a devastating combination of drought, wind, and poor farming practices turned millions of acres of the Great Plains into a wasteland. Ceaseless "black blizzards," turned night into day, killed crops and livestock, threatened the lives of small children, and buried homesteaders' hopes under huge dunes of dirt. The authors tell the story through private letters, newspaper accounts, and vivid interviews conducted with dozens of survivors -- the last living witnesses of the Dust Bowl, who provide scaring details of their families' ordeals. More than 300 archival photos, some from acclaimed photographers and some -- never before published -- from amateur locals, help bring this critical period to life, when the forces of greed, misinformation, and wishful thinking conspired to nearly sweep away the breadbasket of the nation. Here are stories of incredible hardship: More than 850 million tons of topsoil blew away in a single year; 14 million grasshoppers per square mile descended on parched fields; and one-quarter of the region's inhabitants packed up and left. But the Dust Bowl is also about the courage and resilience of those who remained to save their farms and their families. A larger narrative emerges: A morality tale about our relationship to the land, a study of the role and limits of government, and an affirmation of the human capacity for heroic perseverance through the crucible of drought, Depression, and dust

Country music by
Dayton Duncan(
Book
)
4 editions published in 2019 in English and held by 897 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Country music emerged from the American South, where people sang to themselves and to their families at home and in church, and where they danced to fiddle tunes on Saturday nights. With the birth of radio in the 1920s the songs moved from small towns, mountain hollers, and the wide-open West to become the music of an entire nation--a diverse range of sounds and styles from honky tonk to gospel to bluegrass to rockabilly, leading up through the decades to the music's massive commercial success today. But above all, it is the story of the musicians: Hank Williams's tragic honky tonk life; Dolly Parton rising to fame from a dirt-poor childhood; Loretta Lynn turning her experiences into songs that spoke to women everywhere, and many more -- adapted from jacket

A new billion-dollar campaign: Mission 66 is created to build facilities and infrastructure that can accommodate the flood of visitors. A biologist named Adolph Murie introduces the revolutionary notion that predatory animals, which are still hunted, deserve the same protection as other wildlife. In Florida, Lancelot Jones, the grandson of a slave, refuses to sell to developers his family's property on a string of unspoiled islands in Biscayne Bay and instead sells it to the federal government to be protected as a national monument. In the late 1970s, President Jimmy Carter creates an uproar in Alaska when he sets aside 56 million acres of land for preservation, the largest expansion of protected land in history. In 1995, wolves are re-established in Yellowstone, making the world's first national park a little more like what it once was
