The measurement of time : time, frequency and the atomic clock by
Claude Audoin(
Book
)
11 editions published between 2001 and 2006 in English and held by 365 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The book will be ideal as an introduction for graduate students or researchers entering the fields of time and frequency metrology and precise astronomical observation. It will also be useful as a reference for scientists working in these and other applied areas, such as geophysics, atomic physics, astronomy and telecommunications. General readers with a background in science should also find this a fascinating book."--Jacket

The IUGG Upper Mantle Committee has stated that the hypothesis of continental drift envisages horizontal displacements of the continents over th- sands of kilometers, and that it is a principal objective of the Upper Mantle Project to prove whether or not continental drift has occurred. The origin of the hypothesis may be traced to the close similarity in outlines of the coasts on the two sides of the Atlantic Ocean. The theory that the eastern and western hemispheres are drifting apart was expounded in particular by A. Wegener. Modern geophysical theories seek to explain paleomagnetic observations by - suming that two things have occurred in the past: (a) large-scale polar wandering, and (b) continental drift. A direct confirmation of drift, if it exists, is greatly desired. Attempts have been made to prove that continental drift has occurred from - served changes in latitude and longitude. It was thought by some, in fact, that such changes had been detected

Pascal Willis(
Book
)
3 editions published between 1989 and 2019 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Time and Standards - An Overview(
Book
)
2 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Have the frequency stability and accuracy reached a level of quality that exceeds needs in astrometry? This paper attempts to answer this question. After recalling current performances of time and frequency standards and their use in establishing time scales, the author considers their limitations in astronomical observations and studies. For expressing the value of almost all quantities, the accuracy of the frequency standards is sufficient. However, an improved stability could find applications in observation techniques, and the departure of realized time scales with respect to their theoretical counterparts is not negligible for some studies. The paper recalls the basic rule of quantity calculus and advocates its use despite its inadequacy to express difference of readings of time scales. In general, adherence to the metrological practice and the use of the SI may facilitate this work and its understanding by non-astronomers
