Tyler graphics, the extended image by Elizabeth Armstrong( Book )

9 editions published in 1987 in English and held by 500 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Since 1974 Tyler Graphics Ltd. has offered printmaking facilities of unsurpassed sophistication to twenty-nine artists, from Anni and Josef Albers to Robert Zakanitch. The results of their collaborations with Kenneth Tyler and his small staff of highly skilled printers are beautifully illustrated in this intriguing volume of far-ranging essays. The book begins with a brief history of Tyler Graphics and of the Tyler Graphics Archive, written by Martin Friedman, director of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, where the archive is housed. Judith Goldman's lively profile of Kenneth Tyler follows, vivdly conveying the creativity and determination of this irrepressible master printer. She traces his career from his ealry days as an art student at the Art Institute of Chicago through his experiences at Tamarind Lithography Workshop and Gemini G.E.L. in Los Angeles to his establishment of Tyler Graphics Ltd. in Bedford Village, New York. In the first of six essays on the work itself Jack Flam perceptively places Robert Motherwell's collaborations with Tyler in the context of the artist's long involvement with Abstract Expressionism. This is followed by E.C. Goosesen's skillful analysis of gestural works by Helen Frankenthaler, Joan Mitchell, and Nancy Graves. Robert M. Murdock's discerning essay focuses on geometric abstractions by artists including Jack Tworkov, Ellsworth Kelly, and Michael Heizer. Elizabeth Armstrong, who organized this volume, incisively investigates the work of Pop artists such as Richard Hamilton, Claes Oldenburg, and Roy Lichtenstein. Richard H. Axsom devotes his fine essay to Frank Stella's diverse projects at the Tyler workshop. The book concludes with Leonard B. Schlosser's capsule and Ruth E. Fine's fascinationg discussion of the innovative paperworks made by David Hockney, Kenneth Noland, Alan Shields, and many others. With its 140 large color illustrations of prints and several sculptures, Tyler Graphics: The Extended Image provides a revealing overview of the multifaceted art created at the workshop and offers insight into the collaborative complexities of printmaking

Girls' night out by Elizabeth Armstrong( Book )

9 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 247 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Girls' Night Out brings together the work of an international and intergenerational group of women artists whose works in photography and video reflect a new approach to issues of femininity and identity. The artists in Girls' Night Out create works that possess a quasi- documentary feel and a directness of approach as they engage with such classical art genres as self-portraiture, portraiture (especially featuring young women in the passage from girlhood to adulthood), and landscape. Some of their shared themes include provocative inquiries into youth culture, new notions of beauty, ethnographic techniques mixed with fashion devices, and an interest in journalistic aspects of the media. Formally rigorous and aesthetically resolved, this seemingly traditional imagery is infused by lyricism and psychological complexity. The historical context for Girls' Night Out is found in the photography, film, and performance art of the 1970s and 1980s, which addressed social and political themes, often through provocative satire or irony. The open, fluid approach to gender and sexuality evident in the works in Girls' Night Out is informed by the pioneering conceptual and aesthetic stance of earlier artists but also represents a significant rupture with it. This new work confidently explores female identity without the need to challenge or critique feminine archetypes. The resulting imagery is as uncertain, contradictory, and filled with possibility as the adolescents these artists often portray." (résumé éditeur)
