"U.S. Space-Launch Vehicle Technology examines hardware designed explicitly for launching vehicles into space and traces the evolution of that technology from the early Vanguard through the space shuttle. Hunley looks at propulsion systems, structural issues, and guidance-and-control devices. He concludes that the major factors advancing the development of this technology included high levels of cold-war funding, many innovations, an engineering culture that promoted technology transfer and was flexible enough to overcome unexpected problems, and management systems that furnished systems engineering and cost control over a huge number of organizations, thereby supporting and driving the improvements to each type of launch vehicle. Since 1990, however, launch-vehicle technology has entered a new phase whose outcomes and outlines are still unclear."--book jacket

Preludes to U.S. space-launch vehicle technology : Goddard rockets to Minuteman III by J. D Hunley( Book )

5 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 184 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

For nearly 50 years, a wide range of missiles and rockets has propelled U.S. satellites and spacecraft into the sky. This work traces the evolution of this technology, from Robert Goddard's research in the 1920s through the development of the Titan missiles and launch vehicles in the 1960s to the refinement of the space shuttle in the 1980s
The development of propulsion technology for U.S. space-launch vehicles, 1926-1991 by J. D Hunley( Book )

14 editions published between 2007 and 2013 in English and Undetermined and held by 146 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"How did the United States advance from the relatively primitive rocket technology of the Sputnik era to the almost routine ability to access outer space in the 1980s? This comprehensive book answers the above question by tracing the convoluted technological trajectory from Robert H. Goddard's first imaginative rockets to the huge Saturn V and the complex Space Shuttle, among other launch vehicles. While the history of these vehicles has been punctuated by some spectacular failures, on the whole, the engineering achievements have been remarkable." "In this definitive study, J.D. Hunley traces the program's development from Goddard's early rockets (and the German V-2 missile) through the Titan IVA and the Space Shuttle, with a focus on space-launch vehicles. Since these rockets often evolved from early missiles, he pays considerable attention to missile technology, not as an end in itself, but as a contributor to launch-vehicle technology." "Unique in its single-volume coverage of the evolution of launch-vehicle technology from 1926 to 1991, this book will inform scholars and engineers interested in the history of technology and innovation, as well as those specializing in the history of space flight."--Jacket
