George III & Queen Charlotte : patronage, collecting and court taste( Book )

8 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 207 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The 'madness' of George III is the one fact about the King that everybody knows. Some might also say that George III 'lost' the American colonies. Few would be able to add that George III founded the Royal Academy of Arts, that he was a patron of Samuel Johnson and the astronomer William Herschel, and a king who 'gloried in the name of Briton'. Among his contemporaries George III was noted as an outstanding bibliophile and a renowned connoisseur of music, science, painting and architecture. . . . Published to coincide with the major exhibition at The Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace, George III & Queen Charlotte: patronage, collecting and court taste reconsiders the role of George III, Queen Charlotte and their family in encouraging the arts within the court and in society as a whole during the 50 years of the King's reign. Illustrated by a superb range of works of art in the Royal Collection, the book reveals aspects of George III as father, monarch, and man of letters that have generally been overlooked, and demonstrates his true importance as one of the most wide-ranging, influential and far-sighted collectors of his day. It is an important contribution to studies of the fine and decorative arts in the Georgian period, and will be an essential source of referene for both academics and collectors. -- Book jacket

Leonardo da Vinci : anatomical drawings from the Royal Library, Windsor Castle by Leonardo( Book )

3 editions published in 1983 in English and held by 181 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

These fifty sheets of drawings of the human body by Leonardo, made between about 1485 and 1510-15, are based on the artist's own anatomical dissections and show his evolving understanding of physiology. The drawings demonstrate, as well, Leonardo's progress from technical mastery of his subject to consummate draftsmanship. As Sir Robin Mackworth-Young, librarian of Windsor Castle, says of Leonardo in his Preface: "In the primitive conditions of the late fifteenth century, and with no medical training, this astonishing man acquired a knowledge of human anatomy far in advance of the medical profession of his day. And the studies in which he recorded his findings bear comparison as works of art with his exquisite portrayals of the exterior of the human form and of horses, or with his dramatic representations of mountainous landscapes." The catalogue documents the second exhibition of Leonardo's drawings from Windsor; Leonardo da Vinci: Nature Studies was shown at the Museum in 1981. The present catalogue contains a chronological table, glossary, table of concordance, and bibliographical note. Catalogue entries are by Kenneth Keele and Jane Roberts

Unfolding pictures : fans in the Royal Collection by Jane Roberts( Book )

8 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 109 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Royal Collection of fans is unique. Nearly all the fans were created for or presented to their original royal owners, and have an unbroken provenance almost without precedent in the history of fan collecting. This illustrated book presents the most beautiful, important and historically interesting fans, together with the stories of their creation and acquisition, and biographical information on their owners." "The fans in the collection range from a 17th-century lace-cut leather fan, said to have belonged to Charles I, to three fans made in the workshops of Carl Faberge. There are examples in every material conceivable, from paper and lace to ivory, mother-of-pearl, jay and ostrich feathers, enamel and precious stones, and of every type - from the purely decorative to the topographical, from commemorative fans to tiny miniatures and intimate personal gifts." "A general introduction provides background information on the history of fans and this collection in particular, while detailed descriptions and specially commissioned colour photography highlight aspects of design and manufacture. Archive and contextual paintings, drawings, prints and photographs supplement the historical background, while a further important feature of the book is the full description of each fan, giving complete provenance and technical details (following scientific examination), together with a glossary of specialist terms, bibliography, and index."--Jacket

Jacques-Émile Blanche by Jane Roberts( Book )
