This volume is divided into three parts. And, in these three parts, the authors describe the state of Black Baltimore in 2014 as one in which Blacks are more likely to reside in high poverty, resource-poor communities with less access to adequate food, housing, education, transportation, and police protection. Perhaps the legacy of decades of unequal opportunity is most profound in the extraordinary burden of illness and premature death faced by many in Baltimore. As in other high poverty areas across the U.S., the ultimate cost of being Black in Baltmore is a shortened life, far too often filled with poorer health status from birth until death. Chapters in the first part iluminate the social, economic and geographic contexts of the 1960s and the present by investigating issues of employment, education, housing, neighborhoods and politics. The second part examines the explosion of public health related issues that have emerged since the 1960s. The third part, authors examine critical ussues of Black power and leadership. Each section concludes with a list of recommended change by taking action--by learning more, by exploring and joining forces with existing local resources to mold change and equality by being part of a movement to create change. -- Editor's introduction
