Energy developments in the Middle East by Anthony H Cordesman( )

8 editions published between 2004 and 2006 in English and held by 1,498 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Middle Eastern and North African region (MENA) dominates world energy exports today and will likely do so for decades to come, even if world consumers make steady progress in conservation, renewable energy sources, and increases from gas, coal, and nuclear power. The MENA region, however, has been the scene of birth internal crises and external conflicts. On several occasions, these crises have affected either the flow of MENA energy exports or the development of energy production and export capacity. The politics, economics, and social dynamics that shape threats to regional stability are complex. Cordesman details the factors behind these diverse forces and outlines current supply levels and future trends, taking each of these variables into consideration."--Jacket

Japan's security strategy in the post-9/11 world : embracing a new realpolitik by Daniel M Kliman( )

5 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 1,040 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this book, Daniel Kliman argues that the years following September 11, 2001, have marked a turning point in Japan's defense strategy. Utilizing poll data from Japanese newspapers as well as extensive interview material, Kliman chronicles the erosion of normative and legal restraints on Tokyo's security policy. In particular, he notes that both Japanese elites and the general public increasingly view national security from a realpolitik perspective. Japan's more realpolitik orientation has coincided with a series of precedent-breaking defense initiatives. Tokyo deployed the Maritime Self-Defense Force to the Indian Ocean, decided to introduce missile defense, and contributed troops to Iraq's post-conflict reconstruction.'Kliman explains these initiatives as the product of four mutually interactive factors. In the period after September 11, the impact of foreign threats on Tokyo's security calculus became ever more pronounced; internalized U.S. expectations exerted a profound influence over Japanese defense behavior; prime ministerial leadership played an instrumental role in deciding high profile security debates; and public opinion appeared to overtake generational change as a motivator of realpolitik defense policies.'This book rebuts those who exaggerate the nature of Japan's strategic transition. By evaluating potential amendments to Article 9, Kliman demonstrates that Tokyo's defense posture will remain constrained even after constitutional revision

"The reality of the Arab-Israeli balance now consists of two subordinate balances: Israel versus Syria and Israel versus the Palestinians. This timely and important book analyzes these two balances in detail, exploring their impact on defense planning in each country and their meaning for overall strategic risk in the region as a whole. Drawing on the widest ranging and most comprehensive data available on past, current, and future military force structure, Cordesman covers military developments in each of six states - Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Palestine. With the help of charts and tables, he provides an analytical examination of ways in which the changing nature of military and political threats is impacting each state's readiness, and the development of its military force."--BOOK JACKET
