Now with their second edition, Harris and Milkis continue their assessment, creating completely revised edition that includes coverage of the changes in regulatory politics during the Bush and Clinton administrations. They conclude that the essential elements of the 'public lobby regime' remain intact, even as the successive deregulatory assaults on that regime in the 1980's and 1990's have polarized Washington not simply over public policy but more fundamentally over the just ends of the American political system
Presidential greatness by Marc Karnis Landy( Book )

"Marc Landy and Sidney Milkis claim that we have had no great presidents in the last half of this century. In this provocative new book, they explain why." "Landy and Milkis look to the past to show how five presidents - Washington, Jefferson, Jackson, Lincoln, and Franklin Roosevelt - set the standards for presidential leadership and achievement." "Searching for common threads in these five presidencies, Landy and Milkis enable us to better understand both the possibilities and the limitations of the office."--Jacket
The president and the parties : the transformation of the American party system since the New Deal by Sidney M Milkis( Book )

12 editions published in 1993 in English and Undetermined and held by 718 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The President and the Parties is the first book to examine closely the association between the chief executive and the two-party system. It traces the evolution of the president-party relationship and its implication for American Democracy since the New Deal - from FDR's 1938 "Purge" of the Democratic Party to Lyndon Johnson's Great Society to the celebration of executive centralization during the Reagan "Revolution". Milkis argues that reforms intended to liberate the chief executive from the shackles of partisan politics only weakened an already fragile relationship, isolating presidents from what was once popular and institutional support from their parties. By providing a unique perspective on the history and development of American government, Milkis offers new insights into the decline of the party system and the process that fashioned a stronger, more active national state, but one lacking in representative institutions capable of common deliberation and choice. Placing the issue in contemporary perspective, he warns of the challenges ahead for a nation struggling to repair its frayed connection between government and people
Theodore Roosevelt, the Progressive Party, and the transformation of American democracy by Sidney M Milkis( Book )

9 editions published between 2009 and 2011 in English and held by 601 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

During the campaign for the 1912 elections, Theodore Roosevelt and his collective activists promoted the Progressive Party and its ambitious, prescient program of economic, social, and political reform that posed profound challenges to constitutional government in the U.S. The author revisits this history to show how a party seemingly consumed by its leaders' ambition dominated the election and left an enduring legacy that set in motion the rise of mass democracy and the expansion of national administrative power

American government : balancing democracy and rights by Marc Karnis Landy( Book )

15 editions published between 2003 and 2014 in English and held by 228 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The essence of the story of American politics and government is the relationship between liberalism and democracy. American Government demonstrates that the tensions and complementarities between liberalism and democracy are crucial for understanding each and all of the central governing institutions and political elements of American public life. The book provides all the information and breadth of coverage required of an introductory text but does so in a manner that highlights the drama of politics. It shows that the crucial features of the American political system were established through difficult decisions made under enormous pressure and often agonizing, even bloody, conflict. By placing such critical choices in specific times throughout American history, it is the first textbook to adopt an American political development approach."--Jacket
The politics of major policy reform in postwar America( Book )

8 editions published in 2014 in English and held by 137 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Présentation de l'éditeur : "The Politics of Major Policy Reform in Postwar America examines the politics of recent landmark policy in areas such as homeland security, civil rights, health care, immigration, and trade, and it does so within a broad theoretical and historical context. By considering the politics of major programmatic reforms in the United States since the Second World War - specifically, courses of action aimed at dealing with perceived public problems - a group of distinguished scholars sheds light not only on significant efforts to ameliorate widely recognized ills in domestic and foreign affairs but also on systemic developments in American politics and government. In sum, this volume provides a comprehensive understanding of how major policy breakthroughs are achieved, stifled, or compromised in a political system conventionally understood as resistant to major change. Jeffery A. Jenkins is a Professor in the Department of Politics and Faculty Associate in the Miller Center at the University of Virginia. He has published more than thirty articles in peer-reviewed journals, such as the American Journal of Political Science, the Journal of Politics, Legislative Studies Quarterly, and Studies in American Political Development. Patashnik) of Living Legislation: Durability, Change, and the Politics of American Lawmaking (2012)"
