The virgin and the gipsy and other stories by D. H Lawrence( Book )

12 editions published between 2005 and 2014 in English and held by 294 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The stories in this volume are from the last four years of D.H. Lawrence's writing life. Two powerful novellas dominate the collection: The Virgin and the Gipsy and The Escaped Cock (also known as The Man Who Died). Both of these deal with themes of escape and sexual awakening, but in very different contexts. In the first, a young woman from a restrictive English rectory learns about further dimensions to life through her contact with a gipsy; in the second, an unnamed resurrected man - Lawrence's vision of Christ - escapes from the tomb and likewise has a first sexual experience. Related themes are explored by four short stories and three fragments. This edition restores Lawrence's latest forms of the texts, before the changes introduced by censorship, mistakes in transmission and various other forms of interference, with variants recorded. The introduction traces the history of the stories, while the notes offer help with allusions, contexts and other points of potential difficulty or interest."--Jacket
The waves by Virginia Woolf( Book )

15 editions published between 2010 and 2011 in English and held by 243 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Waves is one of the greatest achievements in modern literature. Commonly considered the most important, challenging and ravishingly poetic of Virginia Woolf's novels, it was in her own estimation 'the most complex and difficult of all my books'. This edition will be the most authoritative, most fully collated and annotated text available to scholars to date, and for considerable time to come. It maps the text of The Waves from the first British edition to all other editions published in Woolf's lifetime, as well as to all extant proofs. The text is presented in clearly readable form, with page-by-page direction to emendation, variants, and notes. The substantial introduction includes a detailed account of the novel's composition, publication and early critical reception. There are extensive explanatory notes on the text, a full chronology of composition and publication and a more general chronology covering Woolf's life and works"-

D.H. Lawrence and Italy: Twilight in Italy. Sea and Sardinia. Etruscan places by D. H Lawrence( Book )

2 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 69 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In these impressions of the Italian countryside, Lawrence transforms ordinary incidents into passages of intense beauty. Twilight in Italy is an account of Lawrence's stay among the people of Lake Garda, whose decaying lemon gardens bear witness to the twilight of a way of life centuries old. In Sea and Sardina, Lawrence explores the vigorous spontaneity of a society as yet untouched by the deadening effect of industrialisation. And Sketches of Etruscan Places is a delicate work of literary art, the record of 'a dying man drinking from the founts of a civilisation dedicated to life'
