L'auteur est une Anglaise visiblement fort sensée, instruite et intelligente, mais anonyme ; elle ne voulait pas compromettre les amis avec qui elle avait vécu en France, et qu'on aurait pu découvrir, inquiéter ou même persécuter si elle avait mis son nom en tête de son livre... «Elle avait déjà visité la France ; elle y réside pendant les années 1792, 1793, 1794, 1795, à Lille, à Soissons, à Saint-Omer, à Rouen, à Beauvais, à Arras, à Péronne, à Amiens et enfin à Paris. Elle est détenue depuis le mois d'août 1793 jusqu'au mois d'octobre 1794, d'abord chez elle, puis à Arras et à Amiens dans la maison d'arrêt. En prison, elle écrit au jour le jour en caractères abrégés, et garde son journal caché sur elle... «Il est certain qu'un Français, après avoir lu ce livre, trouvera le breuvage amer ; il faut le boire cependant, car il est salutaire. Nous ne connaissons guère de la révolution française que les effets d'ensemble, l'histoire des assemblées et des insurrections de Paris ; du moins nos grands historiens se sont toujours placés à ce point de vue. Il est utile de voir les choses sous un autre aspect, par le détail, et comme elles se passent, au jour le jour, d'après les impressions successives d'un témoin sincère.
