Nations against the state : the new politics of nationalism in Quebec, Catalonia, and Scotland by Michael Keating( Book )

45 editions published between 1995 and 2001 in 3 languages and held by 690 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Quebec, Catalonia, and Scotland are three stateless nations looking for a future in a world beyond the nation state. This book argues that national identity may be a vital source of social cohesion in a world dominated by markets and global forces, but that this does not necessarily entail sovereign statehood in the traditional sense. These three nations are harbingers of a new post-sovereigntist nationhood."--Jacket
The politics of modern Europe : the state and political authority in the major democracies by Michael Keating( Book )

33 editions published between 1993 and 1999 in English and Undetermined and held by 524 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This important new textbook centres on the theme of the state in Europe, its structures and policy capacity, and its relation to civil society." "After an introductory chapter addressing issues such as conceptions of the state, bureaucracy, interest groups, patronage and political currents, the book continues with chapters focusing on four large, well-established democracies - the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Germany. This is followed by a chapter on Spain, an historic state that has chosen Europe as its theme and guide for its efforts at political, economic and social modernization. Each of these chapters includes discussions of state and government in the country concerned, parties and elections, policy making and territorial policies. The volume concludes with an assessment of European integration, the structure of the Community, and its aims and policies." "The text incorporates extensive data on policy and politics, in the form of tables and charts, as well as additional information in the statistical index, so as to encourage students to make their own judgements and to learn to assess and interpret quantitative material."--Jacket

European integration and the nationalities question by Michael Keating( Book )

23 editions published between 2006 and 2009 in English and Spanish and held by 351 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This topical book examines the effect of European integration on relations between states and minority nations. The editors, picking up an older vocabulary, call this the "nationalities question." This new collection brings together the leading specialists in the field, and covers a wide range of cases, from Northern Ireland in the West, to Estonia and Latvia in the East, and Cyprus in the South-East. The contributors assess how European integration has affected the preparedness of states to accommodate minorities across a range of fundamental criteria, including: enhanced rights protection; autonomy; the provision of a voice for minorities in the European and international arena; and the promotion of cross-border cooperation among communities dissected by state frontiers. The comprehensive chapters stress the importance of the nationality question, and the fact that, contrary to the hopes and beliefs of many on the left and right, it is not going to go away. Beginning with an introductory essay that summarizes the impact of European Integration on the Nationalities Question, this accessible book will be of strong interest to scholars and researchers of Politics, Nationalism, Ethnic Conflict and European Studies

The independence of Scotland : self-government and the shifting politics of union by Michael Keating( Book )

20 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 185 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Three hundred years after its conception) the Anglo-Scottish Union is in serious difficulty. This is not because of a profound cultural divide between England and Scotland but because recent decades have seen the rebuilding of Scotland as a political community, while the ideology and practices of the old unionism have atrophied. Yet while Britishness is in decline, it has not been replaced by a dominant ideology of Scottish independence. Rather Scots are looking to renegotiate the Union to find a new place in the British Isles, in Europe, and in the world. There are few legal, constitutional, or political obstacles to Scottish independence, but an independent Scotland would need to forge a new social and economic project as a small nation in the global market-place, and there has been little serious thinking about the implications of this. Short of independence, there is a range of constitutional options for renegotiating the Union to allow more Scottish self-government along the lines that public opinion seems to favour. The limits are posed not by constitutional principles but by the unwillingness of the English to abandon their unitary conception of the state. The end of the United Kingdom may be provoked not by Scottish nationalism, but by English unionism."--Jacket

The crisis of social democracy in Europe( Book )

12 editions published between 2013 and 2015 in English and held by 125 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Is social democracy in a terminal condition in Europe? Social democracy is in office almost nowhere in Europe and appears bereft of ideas in the face of the economic crisis that might have given it a historic opportunity. While accepting the truth of this, Keating and McCrone take a stand again those who claim that social democracy is dead. By arguing that social democracy is not a single set of ideas or practices but a way of reconciling market capitalism with social inclusion and equality, they show that it has actually been remarkably successful during the 20th century. Its key principles are still relevant but must be adapted to new conditions. This book examines the fortunes of social democracy in western and east-central Europe and the policy challenges in economic policy, labour markets, social welfare, public services, European integration and decentralisation
