Discusses the Scottish policy process in wider UK and European context A critical challenge to Scotland's new system of government is the making and implementation of public policy. This book offers a comprehensive account of the policy process in contemporary Scotland. It identifies the key actors and institutions, patterns of policy making, and the extent of convergence and divergence in comparison with England and other devolved territories. Case studies of policy making in urban and rural policy, education, social inclusion and economic development allow the reader to see how policy making works in practice. There is an analysis of financial planning and decision making, and an examination of Scotland's role in UK and European policy networks. Comparisons are made with other devolved governments in Europe and beyond. The book is based on extensive research, including interviews with leaders of interest groups, politicians and officials across the Scottish Executive and in the Scottish Parliament, an analysis of spending patterns, an examination of the legislative output, and case studies of policy making

European integration and the nationalities question( )

16 editions published between 2006 and 2009 in English and held by 660 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This topical book examines the effect of European integration on relations between states and minority nations. The editors, picking up an older vocabulary, call this the "nationalities question." This new collection brings together the leading specialists in the field, and covers a wide range of cases, from Northern Ireland in the West, to Estonia and Latvia in the East, and Cyprus in the South-East. The contributors assess how European integration has affected the preparedness of states to accommodate minorities across a range of fundamental criteria, including: enhanced rights protection; autonomy; the provision of a voice for minorities in the European and international arena; and the promotion of cross-border cooperation among communities dissected by state frontiers. The comprehensive chapters stress the importance of the nationality question, and the fact that, contrary to the hopes and beliefs of many on the left and right, it is not going to go away. Beginning with an introductory essay that summarizes the impact of European Integration on the Nationalities Question, this accessible book will be of strong interest to scholars and researchers of Politics, Nationalism, Ethnic Conflict and European Studies
Nations against the state : the new politics of nationalism in Quebec, Catalonia, and Scotland by Michael Keating( Book )

35 editions published between 1995 and 2001 in English and Spanish and held by 631 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Quebec, Catalonia, and Scotland are three stateless nations looking for a future in a world beyond the nation state. This book argues that national identity may be a vital source of social cohesion in a world dominated by markets and global forces, but that this does not necessarily entail sovereign statehood in the traditional sense. These three nations are harbingers of a new post-sovereigntist nationhood."--Jacket

The politics of modern Europe : the state and political authority in the major democracies by Michael Keating( Book )

35 editions published between 1993 and 1999 in English and Undetermined and held by 527 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This important new textbook centres on the theme of the state in Europe, its structures and policy capacity, and its relation to civil society." "After an introductory chapter addressing issues such as conceptions of the state, bureaucracy, interest groups, patronage and political currents, the book continues with chapters focusing on four large, well-established democracies - the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Germany. This is followed by a chapter on Spain, an historic state that has chosen Europe as its theme and guide for its efforts at political, economic and social modernization. Each of these chapters includes discussions of state and government in the country concerned, parties and elections, policy making and territorial policies. The volume concludes with an assessment of European integration, the structure of the Community, and its aims and policies." "The text incorporates extensive data on policy and politics, in the form of tables and charts, as well as additional information in the statistical index, so as to encourage students to make their own judgements and to learn to assess and interpret quantitative material."--Jacket

The independence of Scotland : self-government and the shifting politics of union by Michael Keating( Book )

21 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 315 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Three hundred years after its conception) the Anglo-Scottish Union is in serious difficulty. This is not because of a profound cultural divide between England and Scotland but because recent decades have seen the rebuilding of Scotland as a political community, while the ideology and practices of the old unionism have atrophied. Yet while Britishness is in decline, it has not been replaced by a dominant ideology of Scottish independence. Rather Scots are looking to renegotiate the Union to find a new place in the British Isles, in Europe, and in the world. There are few legal, constitutional, or political obstacles to Scottish independence, but an independent Scotland would need to forge a new social and economic project as a small nation in the global market-place, and there has been little serious thinking about the implications of this. Short of independence, there is a range of constitutional options for renegotiating the Union to allow more Scottish self-government along the lines that public opinion seems to favour. The limits are posed not by constitutional principles but by the unwillingness of the English to abandon their unitary conception of the state. The end of the United Kingdom may be provoked not by Scottish nationalism, but by English unionism."--Jacket
Culture, institutions, and economic development : a study of eight European regions by Michael Keating( Book )

14 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 294 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book reviews the debate surrounding the construction of regions and presents eight case studies to illustrate how they are shaped and reshaped in a variety of different ways. The authors find that while the regions exhibit some common patterns, there are significant variations, indicating that there is no definitive model of regional development." "This book offers a systematic comparison of eight distinct regions and stateless nations, each with its own historical identity, but which is constantly being rebuilt in changing economic and political conditions. Avoiding economic or cultural determinism, the authors show how region-builders can shape their own responses to global challenges to produce models of development reflecting differing understandings and social compromises." "Culture, Institutions and Economic Development will be welcomed by academics within the fields of regional studies, European studies and political science."--BOOK JACKET
