The twentieth century : a world history by
Clive Ponting(
Book
)
12 editions published between 1998 and 2014 in English and held by 733 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Eschewing conventional chronological accounts, The Twentieth Century is organized around the major themes of the last hundred years. To help us understand our recent past and probable future, Clive Ponting offers a "world systems" theory. His analysis holds that a few core states have dominated much of the rest of the world, which provides raw materials and cheap labor and remains tied to the core as virtual colonial territory. Between these extremes are Latin America, the Middle East, and eastern Asia, which have a limited shot at self-determination. Economic, social, and political differences between the core and periphery continue to grow. Atlantic predominance, which molded world history for four hundred years, has been challenged by the countries of the Pacific." "The book's central theme revolves around the struggle between progress and barbarism; the hope for our future is that "our conscience will catch up with our reason.""--Jacket

World history : a new perspective by
Clive Ponting(
Book
)
20 editions published between 2000 and 2011 in English and Turkish and held by 242 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book starts from the assumption that the human story has to be seen in the round, examining the evolution of humans, their lives as hunters and gatherers and their eventual adoption of agriculture, before looking at the emergence of civilisation across the globe: in Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, the Indus Valley, Mesoamerica and Peru. It also describes the great empires of Islam, of China and of the Mongols. Towards the end of the story Europe slowly comes to dominate the world, against the background of technical innovations and social and economic change. Now, in the twenty-first century, this European dominance is passing away. The book thus provides a global sweep, and produces a different outlook on human history from most conventional accounts. Gunpowder by
Clive Ponting(
Book
)
10 editions published between 2005 and 2013 in English and Japanese and held by 126 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This book tells the story of the huge impact of gunpowder on every state and empire in the world. For 400 years the Chinese kept it to themselves, until a Mongol soldier leaked the secret to the Islamic world, where gunpowder played a crucial role in the rise of the great empires of the Ottomans and the Mughals: the spectacular capture of Constantinople in 1453 was accomplished through new siege tactics, while India was conquered with muskets and artillery mounted on 700 carts held together with ox harnesses." "Even more important was the impact of gunpowder on Europe where, driven by the demands of almost constant warfare, new weapons created new states. Equally, gunpowder helped Europeans destroy the Aztec and Inca empires and them go on to dominate the rest of the world." "Its extraordinary history ended during the nineteenth century when even more destructive high explosives took over. Gunpowder is packed with unexpected and interesting facts, and reveals its exciting, devastating and important story with global sweep and storytelling power."--Jacket

Armageddon : the Second World War by
Clive Ponting(
Book
)
8 editions published between 1995 and 2012 in English and held by 117 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Armageddon avoids conventional chronological accounts in order to concentrate on the deeper forces shaping the origins, course and outcome of the war across the globe. It analyses how and why the war spread from being a limited European conflict to the only global war, why countries were dragged into the fighting and how only a small number of neutral states escaped. It compares the two alliances, how they mobilised their resources and their strategies for victory. It avoids a detailed description of how commanders manoeuvered on the battlefield and concentrates instead on the impact the war had on individual soldiers, sailors and airmen. Equally important is the fate of hundreds of millions of civilians. How did they survive occupation and what did resistance, collaboration and liberation really involve, and what happened at the end of the war?"--Jacket

Thirteen days : diplomacy and disaster ; the countdown to the Great War by
Clive Ponting(
Book
)
7 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 60 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This book argues that the First World War only occurred because of the situation in the Balkans. It was the outcome of the two Balkan wars between 1912 and 1913, the changes they precipitated in the strategic balance in the region, together with the struggle for influence between Austria-Hungary and Russia, that led to war ... The majority of the book deals with the 'thirteen days' from the presentation of the Austro-Hungarian ultimatum to Serbia on 23 July to Britain's entry into the war on 4 August. It examines how the situation escalated out of control, the decisions taken by the various governments that helped ensure this outcome and why diplomatic attempts to resolve the crisis failed"--Introduction
