The belly of Paris by
Émile Zola(
Book
)
22 editions published between 1895 and 2011 in English and held by 550 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Little known in this country, The Belly of Paris (Le Ventre de Paris) is one of Emile Zola's most wonderfully descriptive, humorous, and exciting fictions. In this novel the author of Germinal, L'Assommoir, Nana and Therese Raquin chooses as his locale the newly built food markets of Paris. Into this extravagance of food - which Zola describes in set pieces that wet the tongue, excite the ear, and stir up the belly - he places his young hero, the half-starved Florent, who has just escaped imprisonment in Cayenne. Florent finds himself at odds with a world he now knows is unjust. Gradually he takes up with the local Socialists, who are more at home in bars than on the revolutionary streets

Truth (Vérité) by
Émile Zola(
Book
)
31 editions published between 1903 and 2018 in English and Undetermined and held by 408 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In a quiet rural village in late-nineteenth-century France, an eleven-year-old boy is found dead in his room, sexually molested and strangled by an unknown assailant. The shocked townsfolk erupt in outrage: Who could have committed this horrible crime? Rumors immediately begin to fly and suspicion shifts from one person to another as conjecture begins to feed on itself. At first a vagrant is suspected; he could have come in through the open window while passing through the town at night. But in a matter of days another story begins to circulate: the culprit must be Simon, the Jewish schoolmaster, and the murdered boy's uncle and guardian. Did he not resent the fact that the boy was a product of a mixed marriage? As a Jew in the midst of a predominately Christian community, Simon is vulnerable. -- Publisher description

Émile Zola, novelist and reformer : an account of his life & work by
Ernest Alfred Vizetelly(
Book
)
15 editions published between 1901 and 1971 in English and French and held by 389 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Uncover the life of Émile Zola, naturalist writer and social reformer, in this important biography by Zola scholar Ernest Alfred Vizetelly. The book looks at Zola from both a literary standpoint and from the viewpoint of Zola as a social activist. Arranged chronologically, the book traces Zola's literary development from his earliest works to his very last ones. Vizetelly considers almost all of Zola's writings by assessing both the context in which they were written and by evaluating Zola's particular goals for his work throughout the different points in his career. In addition to grappling with Zola's literary life, the biography pays close attention to the effects of Zola's own life on his writing. Of particular interest is the Dreyfus affair, in which Zola played a key role in the liberation of Capitan Alfred Dreyfus. The book also offers a series of black and white photographs that help elucidate the life of this important writer and activist
