Sentimental narrative and the social order in France, 1760-1820 by David Denby( Book )

18 editions published between 1994 and 2009 in English and Undetermined and held by 365 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this discerning study of sentimental discourse of the late eighteenth century, David J. Denby sheds new light on Enlightenment thought and sensibility. He reveals how sentimental sub-literature reflects the social attitudes of the emerging bourgeoisie, and how its formal structures are reflected in contemporary theories concerning the nature of society, morality, and politics. Denby explores how the language and forms of sentimental narratives were adopted and exploited by political and social writers, and how sentimentalism provided a theme of continuity underlying the dominant sense of change brought about by the Revolution. In this interdisciplinary book Denby argues that sentimentalism is central to the culture of late eighteenth-century France. Texts discussed include works by Rousseau and de Staël

American sucker by David Denby( )

6 editions published between 2003 and 2009 in English and held by 58 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 2000, David Denby's life was turned upside down when his wife announced that she was leaving him, and he faced the threat of losing his beloved apartment in the split. Bolstered by the "irrational exuberance" of the stock market, he joined the investment frenzy with the goal of being able to buy out his wife's share of the apartment. Denby gathered courage from stock analysts, tech gurus, and lying CEOs at investment conferences. He befriended tech stars like ImClone founder Sam Waksal and Merrill Lynch analyst Henry Blodget, both now disgraced in scandals. He plunged into a season of mania, with cataclysmic results. American sucker is his account of those years of madness, and then of recovered sanity, written with the rueful insights and bitter humor only a wiser man could attain
Snark : a polemic in seven fits by David Denby( Book )

7 editions published between 2009 and 2013 in English and held by 38 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

What is snark? You recognize it when you see it -- a tone of teasing, snide, undermining abuse, nasty and knowing, that is spreading like pinkeye through the media and threatening to take over how Americans converse with each other and what they can count on as true. Snark attempts to steal someone's mojo, erase her cool, annihilate her effectiveness. In this sharp and witty polemic, -- New York Times Denby has fun snarking the snarkers, expelling the bums and promoting the true wits, but he is also making a serious point: the Internet has put snark on steroids. In politics, snark means the lowest, most insinuating and insulting side can win. For the young, a savage piece of gossip could ruin a reputation and possibly a future career. And for all of us, snark just sucks the humor out of life. Denby defends the right of any of us to be cruel, but shows us how the real pros pull it off. Snark, he says, is for the amateurs
