Truly great achievements are not wholly realized by the particular tools and techniques people use to accomplish their feats; rather, it is the passion and commitment of the people leading and performing the remarkable feats that make such efforts not only noteworthy but also life affirming statements of the power of human ability. This article examines the Voyager project, the five-year aeronautical research and development effort that culminated with the production of an aircraft that flew--in nine days during December 1986--around the world without stopping and without fueling. In doing so, it details the passion of the team--led by pilots Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager, aircraft designer Burt Rutan, and project manager Peter Riva--tells the story of how they designed and developed Voyager, as opposed to discussing any particular project management practices they used to realize this project. It describes the challenges of designing, financing, testing, and producing an aircraft capable of circumnavigating the world without stopping. It also explains the process of establishing a mission control center to handle weather and aircraft performance during the world flight attempt; it details Voyager's biological support systems and its final test flights, including the problems that occurred during these tests and the solutions the team developed to improve the aircraft's overall performance. Accompanying this article are two question-and-answer articles: the first features Peter Riva describing a personal behind-the-scenes account of realizing the project; the second profiles Jeana Yeager talking about her experience in working on the project, from inception to post-landing
