The legacy of Rome by Cyril Bailey( Book )

116 editions published between 1900 and 1998 in English and Spanish and held by 1,861 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is an endeavour to trace in many fields the extent of the inheritance which the modern world owes to Ancient Rome. The chapters have been written independently, and it will be seen that they are not all on the same plan. Some writers have described the contribution of Rome to civilization, and have left it to the reader to infer the extent of the legacy; others have traced the steps by which the legacy has come to us, and to this subject Professor Foligno has devoted a valuable chapter
On the nature of things = De rerum natura by Titus Lucretius Carus( Book )

309 editions published between 1897 and 2015 in 6 languages and held by 1,427 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Since the publication of the 4th edition much work has been done both on the poem itself and on its Epicurean sources. It is the purpose of this edition to present the main results of that work, and to explain in general and in detail the meaning of the poem and its intention. Problems of text, language and interpretation are dealt with in relation to the main purpose of exposition. The edition is in three volumes, of which the first contains the Prolegomena and the text with translation on the opposite page; the Commentary on the six books occupies the other two volumes

8 editions published between 1940 and 1956 in English and held by 1,045 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From the Dust Jacket: In the writings of Epicurus, Epictetus, Lucretius and Marcus Aurelius, Greek and Roman philosophy comes into its fullest flowering. The advocates of the principles of virtue and pleasure are brought together into a single inexpensive volume for the first time; hitherto their works were obtainable only in separate, expensive editions. The four thinkers here represented have been brilliantly translated by Cyril Bailey, H.A.J. Munro, P.E. Matheson and George Long. In addition, Cleanthes' famous poem Hymn to Zeus and Matthew Arnold's Essay on Marcus Aurelius are included

Lucretius: On the nature of things ; and, The Discourses of Epictetus ; and, The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius by Titus Lucretius Carus( Book )

29 editions published between 1910 and 2014 in English and Latin and held by 760 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Lucretius' only extant work, written in dactylic hexameter, addressed to Gaius Memmius (who became praetor in 58 BC and failed to be converted), written c. 59 BC, possibly incomplete and lacking final revision. He faithfully reproduces the doctrines or Epicurus. Epicurus was born in Samos 341 BC, after Athens had been defeated by Philip II of Macedon. Most of his writings have perished, particularly On Nature. Lucretius regarded him as the spiritual savior of mankind. Epicureanism was a missionary philosophy, aiming to give man happiness by making him self-sufficient. Its key teachings included: Study science in order to rid yourself of unnecessary fears, especially of the gods and death. Sensation is the basis of all knowledge. Pleasure that leads to pain should be avoided and pain that leads to pleasure should not be avoided. Pleasure means freedom from pain in the body and trouble in the mind. Not all desires are to be satisfied. Most pleasure is to be obtained by living a simple life
