The legacy of Rome by Cyril Bailey ( Book )
103 editions published between 1900 and 1998 in 3 languages and held by 1,902 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book is an endeavour to trace in many fields the extent of the inheritance which the modern world owes to Ancient Rome. The chapters have been written independently, and it will be seen that they are not all on the same plan. Some writers have described the contribution of Rome to civilization, and have left it to the reader to infer the extent of the legacy; others have traced the steps by which the legacy has come to us, and to this subject Professor Foligno has devoted a valuable chapter. - Editor's note

4 editions published in 1940 in English and held by 1,074 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
From the Dust Jacket: In the writings of Epicurus, Epictetus, Lucretius and Marcus Aurelius, Greek and Roman philosophy comes into its fullest flowering. The advocates of the principles of virtue and pleasure are brought together into a single inexpensive volume for the first time; hitherto their works were obtainable only in separate, expensive editions. The four thinkers here represented have been brilliantly translated by Cyril Bailey, H. A. J. Munro, P. E. Matheson and George Long. In addition, Cleanthes' famous poem Hymn to Zeus and Matthew Arnold's Essay on Marcus Aurelius are included

LUCRETIUS (Titus Lucretius Carus) lived from c. 99-c. 55 B.C., but the details of his career are unknown. He is the author of the great didactic poem in hexameters, De Rerum Natura (On the Nature of Things). In six books compounded of solid reasoning, brilliant imagination, and noble poetry, he expounds the scientific theories of the Greek philosopher Epicurus, with the aim of dispelling fear of the gods and fear of death and so enabling man to attain peace of mind and happiness. In Book 1 he establishes the general principles of the atomic system, refutes the views of rival physicists, and proves the infinity of the universe and of its two ultimate constituents, matter and void. In Book 2 he explains atomic movement, the variety of atomic shapes, and argues that the atoms lack colour, sensation, and other secondary qualities. In Book 3 he expounds the nature and composition of mind and spirit, proves their mortality, and argues that there is nothing to fear in death. Book 4 explains the nature of sensation and thought, and ends with an impressive account of sexual love. Book 5 describes the nature and formation of our world, astronomical phenomena, the beginnings of life on earth, and the development of civilization. In Book 6 the poet explains various atmospheric and terrestrial phenomena, including thunder, lightning, earthquakes, volcanoes, the magnet, and plagues. The whole work presents the age-long problem of religion and science; and throughout the interest is maintained by the importance of the subject, and the fervour and poetry of the author
