Multicultural education : a source book by Patricia G Ramsey( Book )

Multicultural education, as defined by Patricia G. Ramsey and Leslie R. Williams, is a process-oriented creation of learning experiences that foster educational equity, an awareness of and respect for the diversity of our society and world; and a commitment to create a more just and equitable society for all people. These learning experiences are relevant to all children and their families, all pedagogical, curricular and administrative decisions and every aspect of local and national educational policy. Following this philosophy, Ramsey and Williams have assembled a new and updated sourcebook containing essays and annotations about a variety of issues in multicultural education. This new edition gathers a range of topics and puts them in a meaningful historical context. The authors offer a comprehensive overview of multicultural education's past, it's current status and its possible futures

Teaching and Learning in a Diverse World. Multicultural Education forYoung Children. Early Childhood Education Series by Patricia G Ramsey( Book )

1 edition published in 1987 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This book is written to help teachers incorporate a more realistic view of the world, respect for diversity, and a sense of shared humanity into all areas of their work with children aged 3 to 8 years. It focuses on young children's understanding of differences, their interpersonal and intergroup relationships, and related teaching practices, making it clear that teachers' attitudes and behaviors influence children's world views. The perspective offered is somewhat broader than that implied by the term "multicultural education," in that it aims to help children develop positive gender, racial, cultural, class, and individual identities and to see themselves as part of the larger society. Practical suggestions are offered for implementing the multicultural approach, from representing diversity in the physical setting of the classroom to dealing with multilingual classrooms. Of particular interest is a chapter on resolving disagreements between parents and teachers. A list of 60 books for children's further reading is provided. (Contains 184 references.) (Sld)

There are 10 chapters in two parts. Chapter 1, "Growing Up in a World of Contradictions and Injustices: a Multicultural Response," discusses links between multicultural and environmental issues, multicultural goals for children, parent and teacher roles, and approaching multicultural issues. Part 1, "Contexts of Learning," includes: (2) "We Are All Learning"; (3) "The Context of Race"; (4) "The Economic Context"; (5) "The Context of Culture;" (6) "The Context of Gender and Sexual Orientation"; and (7) "The Context of Abilities and Disabilities." Part 2, "Everyday Multiculturalism: Practical Applications," includes (8) "Challenging Our Assumptions and the Status Quo"; (9) "Physical Environment and Materials"; and (10) "Building Critical Supportive Communities."
