Martin Heidegger and the problem of historical meaning by Jeffrey Andrew Barash( )

42 editions published between 1982 and 2006 in 4 languages and held by 1,375 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Here for the first time in paperback, this book explores the central role of historical thought in the full range of Heidegger's thought, both the early writings leading up to Being and Time and after the "reversal" or Kehre that inaugurated his later work. Barash examines Heidegger's views on history in a richly developed context of the debates in the German philosophy of history. He addresses a key unifying theme, the problem of historical meaning and the search for coherent criteria of truth in an era of historical relativism, as he traces Heidegger's engagement with historicity. Barash expands this edition to explore new material, most importantly Heidegger's Freiburg and Marburg course lectures that have appeared since the publication of the first edition and Heidegger's correspondence with Hannah Arendt and Heinrich Rickert. Barash also adds an enlarged, updated bibliography."--Jacket
The symbolic construction of reality : the legacy of Ernst Cassirer by Jeffrey Andrew Barash( )

13 editions published between 2008 and 2011 in English and held by 1,346 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In 1933 eminent philosopher Ernst Cassirer (1874-1945) fled Nazi Germany for the United States. His fame in Europe having already been established and subsequently confirmed through a public debate with Martin Heidegger in 1929, Cassirer would go on to become a noteworthy influence on American culture. The Symbolic Construction of Reality collects eleven essays by a wide range of contributors from different fields. Each essay analyzes a different aspect of his legacy, reassessing its significance for our contemporary world and bringing much-needed attention to this seminal thinker."--Jacket
Collective memory and the historical past by Jeffrey Andrew Barash( Book )

10 editions published between 2016 and 2020 in English and held by 395 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

There is one critical way we honor great tragedies: by never forgetting. Collective remembrance is as old as human society itself, serving as an important source of social cohesion, yet as Jeffrey Andrew Barash shows in this book, it has served novel roles in a modern era otherwise characterized by discontinuity and dislocation. Drawing on recent theoretical explorations of collective memory, he elaborates an important new philosophical basis for it, one that unveils important limitations to its scope in relation to the historical past. Crucial to Barash's analysis is a look at the radical transformations that the symbolic configurations of collective memory have undergone with the rise of new technologies of mass communication. He provocatively demonstrates how such technologies' capacity to simulate direct experience especially via the image actually makes more palpable collective memory's limitations and the opacity of the historical past, which always lies beyond the reach of living memory. Thwarting skepticism, however, he eventually looks to literature specifically writers such as Marcel Proust, Walter Scott, and W.G. Sebald to uncover subtle nuances of temporality that might offer inconspicuous emblems of a past historical reality

Paul Ricoeur by Jean Grondin( Book )

4 editions published in 2008 in French and held by 58 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

5 editions published in 2014 in French and held by 44 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Günther Anders, Hannah Arendt, Hans Jonas, Emmanuel Levinas, Karl Löwith, Herbert Marcuse, Leo Strauss, Eric Weil ...

Politiques de l'histoire by Jeffrey Andrew Barash( )

1 edition published in 2015 in French and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
