The Johannine Council, witness to unity by
Bernhard Häring(
Book
)
23 editions published between 1963 and 1964 in German and English and held by 457 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A theological commentary on the ecumenical mission of the Second Vatican Council. In this it differs from the many varied--and often contradictory--assessments and factual reports of conciliar events during the first session. The author finds the ruling genius of the Council in its Johannine character: in its reflection of John the Baptist, the preacher of penance and conversion; of John the Divine, the theologian of love and unity; and of John XXII as chief bishop of all mankind. In the light of this spirit the events of the first session of the Council are interpreted with a view to providing new insights into the probable achievement of subsequent sessions. Discusses the need for increased use of the vernacular in the liturgy, for concellebration and for occasional admission of the laity to the chalice. Speaks of a clearer appreciation of the role of individual bishops, and of the laity's intrinsic right--even apart from official Catholic Action--to bear witness to its faith. Writing especially as a moralist, the author is gently critical of recent controversies over means and ends in marriage. Finally, in the social sphere he calls for an implementation of the teaching of "Mater et Magistra" and for an effort on the part of Catholics to draw what truths they can from the alien doctrines of Marxism and Existentialism

Christian renewal in a changing world; a new approach to moral theology by
Bernhard Häring(
Book
)
27 editions published between 1964 and 1992 in 3 languages and held by 440 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Points to the fundamental truth that the Christian's authentic responsibility for others and the world at large flows from his personal response to the redemptive Word of God. It is not confined to simple enumerations of duties and obligations, but emphasizes the indisputable primacy of charity. It is addressed to all people of good will -- calling them to the sublime heights of Christian perfection in a loving and generous response to the self-sacrificing love of Christ and the needs of one's neighbour

Christian maturity by
Bernard Häring(
Book
)
16 editions published between 1967 and 1983 in English and German and held by 380 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Christian maturity, as the author defines it, is the radical appreciation of one's own status in the eyes of God; it means that one knows one's dignity and one's freedom as a citizen of God's kingdom and subject of his law of love. In a series of meditations the author shows that acceptance of law, whether civil or ecclesiastical, far from crushing the human spirit, liberates and invigorates it; that the theological virtues strengthen the Christian in his encounter with the trials of daily life; that a common holiness binds together in fellowship all members of the Christian community. He concludes with some practical reflections on the piety of the laity, on marriage as a way of salvation, and on love in the single state

Bernhard Häring(
Book
)
21 editions published between 1956 and 1967 in English and German and held by 369 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Places the basis of authority and the meaning of obedience in its proper scriptural setting. We are a redeemed people, and servility is alien to our Christian calling: redeemed by love, we must walk in its light. Christ is our law; and those who rule and those who obey must be guided by the law of love

A sacramental spirituality by
Bernhard Häring(
Book
)
5 editions published between 1962 and 1965 in English and German and held by 346 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"The book's purpose is to encourage the growth of the spiritual life, to help to make liturgical devotion more alive and more profound, to draw meditation and public worship closer together, and to show the organic unity between the realities of faith in the sacraments and the way of life these demand from those upon whom they have been conferred. It is hope that the book will also be of use to fellow priests in the preparation of sermons and instructions." [Preface]
