A superb copy of the first edition in English, which may or may not precede the French <U+2018>original<U+2019>, likewise printed and published in London by Rivington. <U+2018>Countess<U+2019> de la Motte (1756-1791) was a confidence artist who claimed illegitimate kinship with Henry II, appropriated a title, and charmed her way into the court-circle of Marie Antoinette. Claiming intimacy with the Queen, and taking lovers as needed, she perpetuated--with the help of her husband and the Queen<U+2019>s valet-de-chambre Retaux de Villette--the infamous <U+2018>affaire du collier<U+2019>, or <U+2018>diamond necklace affair<U+2019>, in which the out-of-favour Cardinal de Rohan was persuaded that he might regain the graces of Louis XVI by helping Marie to acquire a fabulously expensive piece of jewellery, originally commissioned by Louis XV for Mme. du Barry. La Motte made use of forged encouraging replies, signed by the Queen, to the Cardinal<U+2019>s credulous letters (arranging also a discreet midnight meeting between the dupe and a prostitute impersonating Marie) to procure promissory notes, take possession of the necklace in the Queen<U+2019>s name, and hand it over to her husband instead, who fled with it to England, where it was dismantled and sold stone by stone. When the forgeries were exposed (the King himself was disgusted with Rohan for crediting a supposed signature <U+2018>Marie Antoinette de France<U+2019>--as if Royals so qualified themselves--La Motte was tried, convicted, and committed to the Bastille. But she escaped and rejoined her husband in London, where they seem to have lived on the residue of their theft, but resorted to blackmail in hopes of exoneration, she threatening to publicize damning details of the Queen<U+2019>s supposed extravagance. When such approaches prove fruitless, La Motte published the above Memoirs, or Memoires Justificatifs, which became a wildfire best seller, with the French version calling for at least sixteen editions with <U+2018>London<U+2019> imprints in 1789-90, mostly pirated in Paris or Germany and Holland, and the English translation at least two. In spite of, or perhaps partly because of, a huge pamphlet response pro and con, this utterly incredible text, blaming everyone on earth save the shameless author, certainly contributed to the public perception of Marie Antoinette and her courtly entourage as luxurious, dissipated, and a blight on the national character, a view which in turn helped to precipitate the Revolution itself. Mirabeau wrote that <U+2018>Madame de la Motte<U+2019>s voice alone brought on the horrors of July 14 [the storming of Versailles] and of October 5 [the slaughter of the troops there by the <U+2018>Women<U+2019>s Army<U+2019>]<U+2019>. The original forgeries of Marie Antoinette<U+2019>s self-incriminating letters to Rohan were destroyed by the latter, while his to her were never even delivered, so that in order to publish the former in the documentary appendix to this volume, La Motte herself had to re-forge the original forgeries (which may have been created, physically, by Villette, who knew his mistress<U+2019>s hand). In so performing, she takes her place among the very few known female forgers of literary texts: we can think only of the precedent hoax of Elizabeth Halkett, Lady Wardlaw (the light-hearted fabrication of the <U+2018>Hardyknute<U+2019> fragment, 1719), the biographical and autobiographical forgeries of Olivia Wilmot Serres and her daughter (1813 onward), the Oscar Wilde pastiche by Mrs. Mabel Chan Toon, the recent fake letter of Sir Walter Raleigh by his late editor Agnes Latham, and the sordid <U+2018>confessions<U+2019> of Lee Israel. Can anyone suggest others? The sequence of publication of La Motte<U+2019>s Memoirs, in English or French, is not easy to establish: according to her own Address to the Public &c, completed after 20 October 1788, she was then dispossessed of her manuscript, it having been ghost-edited, corrupted, and carried away by <U+2018>friendly<U+2019> French intermediaries, although I doubt that anything La Motte says is altogether credible. Nonetheless, the last supplicating letter to Louis XVI in this English version dates itself 1 January 1789, which suggests either a very hasty reconstruction of the original, and a whirlwind translation, or that Rivington already had the latter in hand, awaiting payment from her (La Motte says the sum of £150 was required) to proceed with it. The letter to Louis is followed, in most if not all copies, by La Motte<U+2019>s own full signature to p. [261]. a <U+2018>guarantee<U+2019> gesture previously employed by Sterne in Tristram Shandy, and Edmond Hoyle for The Game of Whist. This personal touch, as well as the other MS corrections/revisions in our copy--which do not appear in the British Library copy on ECCO--strongly suggest that La Motte herself, whose personal proprietorship the imprint declares, took the trouble to emend what she could, so that this version, rather than the widely-pirated French one, may stand as <U+2018>authoritative<U+2019>
