The memoir describes her husband's career in some detail from the time he came to the U.S. with Adet in 1795 until his death in 1827. It describes his many business misfortunes, particularly his bankruptcy in New York as a result of the failure of the French government to reimburse him for provisioning French forces in Santo Domingo. There are also useful references to E.I. du Pont and the development of the Delaware powder mills. References to Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours include an explanation for his failure to receive a peerage at the Restauration. Josephine and Victor's life in the frontier settlement of Angelica is described in great detail
