The Satyricon of Petronius Arbiter by Petronius Arbiter( Book )

12 editions published between 1922 and 2012 in English and held by 430 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is work of fiction by the Latin author Petronius written about the middle of the first century A.D. The identity of Petronius is uncertain. He may well have been Gaius Petronius Arbiter, a courtier and companion in debauchery of the Emperor Nero, who fell out of his master's favor and committed suicide in A.D. 65. The Satyricon is a somewhat scandalous work of fiction of which only fragments (Bks. 14, 15, and 16 from its at least twenty books) are still in existence and it presents a bawdy picture of life in Rome at the time of the Emperor Nero

Persian letters by Charles-Louis de Secondat Montesquieu( Book )

29 editions published between 1821 and 2010 in 3 languages and held by 113 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Emile : or, On education by Jean-Jacques Rousseau( Book )

14 editions published between 1817 and 1986 in Spanish and French and held by 31 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Alan Bloom's new translation of Emile, Rousseau's masterpiece on the education and training of the young, is the first in more than seventy years. In it, Bloom, whose magnificent translation of Plato's Republic has been universally hailed as a virtual rediscovery of that timeless text, again brings together the translator's gift for journeying between two languages and cultures and the philosopher's perception of the true meaning and significance of the issues being examined in the work. The result is a clear, readable, and highly engrossing text that at the same time offers a wholly new sense of the importance and relevance of Rousseau's thought to us. In addition to his translation, Bloom provides a brilliant introduction that relates the structure and themes of the book to the vital preoccupation's of our own age, particularly in the field of education, but also more generally to the current concerns about the limits and possibilities of human nature. Thus in this translation Emile, long a classic in the history of Western thought and educational theory, becomes something more: a prescription, fresh and dazzling, for the bringing up of autonomous, responsible--that is, truly democratic--human beings

A partial reprint of the text by Nicolau Eymerich (1376) with commentaries and additions by Francisco Peña (1578). A collection of instructions for the use of Inquisition officials, including descriptions of the victims of persecution (e.g. heretics, Conversos, etc.), procedures to be followed (e.g. denunciation, investigation, interrogation, sentencing), as well as the powers invested in the Inquisitors (e.g. torture, imprisonment, confiscation). The preface to this edition (pp. 9-28), by Leonardo Boff, denounces the Inquisition as an intolerant, un-Christian institution, established to eradicate all that is different
Fragmentum Petronii by José Marchena( Book )

3 editions published in 2007 in Spanish and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
