Hokusai : beyond the great wave by Hokusai Katsushika( Book )

1 edition published in 2017 in English and held by 452 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"An acknowledged master during his lifetime, Hokusai created sublime works during the last thirty years of his life, right up to his death at the age of ninety. His long artistic career is often presented as a chronological sequence. This publication takes a fresh approach based on innovative scholarship: thematic groupings of late works are related to the major spiritual and artistic quests of Hokusai's life. Hokusai's personal beliefs are contemplated here through analyses of major brush paintings, drawings, woodblock prints and illustrated books. Due attention is also paid to the contribution of Hokusai's daughter Eijo (Ōi), an accomplished artist in her own right. Hokusai continually explored the mutability and minutiae of natural phenomena in his art. His late subjects and styles were based on a mastery of eclectic Japanese, Chinese and European techniques and an encyclopaedic knowledge of nature, myth, and history."--

The autobiography of a snake by Andy Warhol( Book )

"This is the never-before-published story of a snake trying to make it in the world of sixties high society, strongly suggested to be a stand-in for Warhol himself. The snake's tongue-in-cheek observations as he slithers from adorning Jackie Kennedy's boots to embellishing Coco Chanel's shirt will delight the sophisticated fashion crowd. But the stars of the show are Warhol's whimsical illustrations, revivified with a color scheme inspired by his iconic Pop Art"-- Amazon
Bruegel : the master by Elke Oberthaler( Book )

1 edition published in 2018 in English and held by 140 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Pieter Bruegel the Elder and his work have attained a legendary status in our collective consciousness. The most important Netherlandish painter and draughtsman of the 16th century had already achieved great fame during his own lifetime, but was largely forgotten until his rediscovery by art historians in the early 20th century. Just over forty paintings by Bruegel's own hand survive. His complex, multi-layered compositions, which draw on the earlier pictorial traditions of Hieronymus Bosch, are often moralizing, and teem with characters. The variety of subjects and their originality of execution inspire wonder to this day. Published to accompany a major exhibition at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, this spectacular catalogue allows readers to immerse themselves in the immensely rich pictorial world of the Netherlandish master. In uniting the artist's works in different media--paintings, drawings, and prints--it highlights his perfect handling and executive, his virtuoso use of color and his draftsmanship."

Peter Beard by Peter Beard( Book )

1 edition published in 2008 in English and held by 121 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Photographer, collector, diarist, and writer of books Peter Beard has fashioned his life into a work of art; the illustrated diaries he kept from a young age evolved into a serious career as an artist and earned him a central position in the international art world. He was painted by Francis Bacon, painted on by Salvador Dalí, and made diaries with Andy Warhol; he toured with Truman Capote and the Rolling Stones, created books with Jacqueline Onassis and Mick Jagger, all of whom are brought to life, literally and figuratively, in his work. As a fashion photographer, he took Vogue stars like Veruschka to Africa and brought new ones - most notably Iman - back to the U.S. with him. After spending time in Kenya and befriending the author Isak Dinesen (Karen Blixen) in the early 1960s, Beard bought a piece of land near hers. He witnessed the dawn of Kenya’s population explosion, which challenged finite resources and stressed animal populations - including the starving elephants of Tsavo, dying by the tens of thousands in a wasteland of eaten trees. So he documented what he saw - with diaries, photographs, and collages. He went against the wind in publishing unique and sometimes shocking books of these works. The corpses were laid bare; the facts were carefully written down, sometimes in type, often by hand, occasionally with blood. Peter Beard’s most important collages are included, along with hundreds of smaller-scale works and diaries, magnified to show every detail - from Beard’s meticulous handwriting and old-masters-inspired drawings to stones and bones and bits of animals pasted to the page
