Beloved boy : letters to Hendrik C. Andersen, 1899-1915 by Henry James( Book )

6 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 268 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Even greater than his feelings for Andersen, however, was James's devotion to art. Despite an initially positive opinion, James was forced to reassess Andersen's work, which became increasingly grandiose - exhibiting "megalomania," as James bluntly diagnosed it. The sculptor's tendency towards monumentality, including plans for a utopian "World City," were at odds with James's commitment to observing reality in all its complexity and imperfection. Despite this, James's affection for his friend never wavered; his letters remained occasions to celebrate the youth and beauty personified for him by Andersen."--Jacket

Letters to Isabella Stewart Gardner by Henry James( Book )

4 editions published between 2008 and 2012 in English and held by 123 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Surrounded by artists, writers and musicians who constituted her court in Boston as in Venice, Isabella Stewart Gardner, a passionate art collector with enormous funds, was as revered and sought after as royalty. Henry James had a real affection for her, and was inspired by the rich and powerful Mrs Gardner and her magnificent pearls, as well as by the Palazzo Barbaro in Venice, for his novel The Wings of the Dove made into a film in 1997. Mrs Gardner was to recreate a larger than life version of Palazzo Barbaro in Boston, which is now the Isabella Gardner Museum. These letters add another dimension to what we know of Henry James long relationship with Venice and the Palazzo Barbaro."--

Henry James's Europe: Heritage and Transfer by Dennis Tredy( )

2 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 21 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As an American author who chose to live in Europe, Henry James frequently wrote about cultural differences between the Old and New World. The plight of bewildered Americans adrift on a sea of European sophistication became a regular theme in his fiction. This collection of twenty-four papers from some of the world's leading James scholars offers a comprehensive picture of the author's cross-cultural aesthetics. It provides detailed analyses of James's perception of Europe--of its people and places, its history and culture, its artists and thinkers, its aesthetics and its ethics--which ultimately lead to a profound reevaluation of his writing. With in-depth analysis of his works of fiction, his autobiographical and personal writings, and his critical works, the collection is a major contribution to current thinking about James, transtextuality and cultural appropriation
