13 editions published between 2000 and 2012 in English and held by 254 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This volume contains the refereed proceedings of the conference on Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations, Dynamics and Continuum Physics which was held at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, from July 19th to July 23rd, 1998. Models examined derive from a wide range of applications, including elasticity, thermoviscoelasticity, granular media, fluid dynamics, gas dynamics and conservation laws. Mathematical topics include existence theory and stability/instability of traveling waves, asymptotic behavior of solutions to nonlinear wave equations, effects of dissipation, mechanisms of blow-up, well-posedness and regularity, and fractal solutions." "The text will be of interest to graduate students and researchers working in nonlinear partial differential equations and applied mathematics."--Jacket

The Korteweg-de Vries equation posed in a quarter-plane by Jerry L Bona( Book )

5 editions published in 1981 in English and Undetermined and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An initial- and boundary-value problem for the Korteweg-de Vries equation is shown to be well-posed. The considered problem may serve as a model for unidirectional propagation of plane waves generated by a wavemaker in a uniform medium. Such models apply in regimes in which nonlinear and dispersive effects are of comparable small order. (Author)

Numerical schemes for a model for nonlinear dispersive waves by J. L Bona( Book )

4 editions published in 1983 in English and Undetermined and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A description is given of a number of numerical schemes to solve an evolution equation (Korteweg-deVries) that arises when modelling the propagation of water waves in a channel. The discussion also includes the results of numerical experiments made with each of the schemes. It is suggested, on the basis of these experiments, that one of the schemes may have (discrete) solitary-wave solutions. (Author)
A comparison of solutions of two model equations for long waves by Jerry L Bona( Book )

4 editions published in 1983 in English and Undetermined and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This paper is concerned with mathematical models representing the unidirectional propagation of weakly nonlinear dispersive waves. Interest will be directed toward two particular models that are originally studied in the context of surface-wave phenomena in open-channel flows. The purpose of the present paper is to make a quantitative comparison between the solutions to the initial-value problem for each of these models. The basic conclusion of the study is that, on a long time scale T naturally related to the underlying physical situation, the equations predict the same outcome to within their implied order of accuracy. In this case the choice of one of these models over the other to describe a physical problem is apparently immaterial, with factors of incidental convenience probably providing the main criteria in a given situation. Finite - amplitude steady waves in stratified fluids by Jerry L Bona( Book )

4 editions published in 1982 in English and Undetermined and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An exact theory regarding solitary internal gravity waves in stratified fluids is presented. Two-dimensional, inviscid, incompressible flows confined between plane horizontal rigid boundaries are considered. Variational techniques are used to demonstrate that the Euler equations possess solutions that represent progressing waves of permanent form. These are analogous to the surface, solitary waves so easily generated in a flume. Periodic wave trains of permanent form, the analogue of the classical cnoidal waves, are also found. Moreover, internal solitary-wave solutions are shown to arise as the limit of cnoidal wave trains as the period length grows unboundedly. (Author)
Convergence of Periodic Wavetrains in the Limit of Large Wavelength by J. L Bona( Book )

3 editions published in 1981 in English and Undetermined and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The korteweg-de Vries equation was originally derived as a model for unidirectional propagation of water waves. This equation possesses a special class of traveling-wave solutions corresponding to surface solitary waves. It also has permanent-wave solutions which are periodic in space, the so-called cnoidal waves. A classical observation of Korteweg and de Vries was that the solitary wave is obtained as a certain limit of cnoidal wavetrains. This results is extended here, in the context of the Korteweg-de Vries equation. It is demonstrated that a general class of solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries equation is obtained as limiting forms of periodic solutions, as the period becomes large. (Author)
