This paper is concerned with mathematical models representing the unidirectional propagation of weakly nonlinear dispersive waves. Interest will be directed toward two particular models that are originally studied in the context of surfacewave phenomena in openchannel flows. The purpose of the present paper is to make a quantitative comparison between the solutions to the initialvalue problem for each of these models. The basic conclusion of the study is that, on a long time scale T naturally related to the underlying physical situation, the equations predict the same outcome to within their implied order of accuracy. In this case the choice of one of these models over the other to describe a physical problem is apparently immaterial, with factors of incidental convenience probably providing the main criteria in a given situation. An exact theory regarding solitary internal gravity waves in stratified fluids is presented. Twodimensional, inviscid, incompressible flows confined between plane horizontal rigid boundaries are considered. Variational techniques are used to demonstrate that the Euler equations possess solutions that represent progressing waves of permanent form. These are analogous to the surface, solitary waves so easily generated in a flume. Periodic wave trains of permanent form, the analogue of the classical cnoidal waves, are also found. Moreover, internal solitarywave solutions are shown to arise as the limit of cnoidal wave trains as the period length grows unboundedly. (Author)

The kortewegde Vries equation was originally derived as a model for unidirectional propagation of water waves. This equation possesses a special class of travelingwave solutions corresponding to surface solitary waves. It also has permanentwave solutions which are periodic in space, the socalled cnoidal waves. A classical observation of Korteweg and de Vries was that the solitary wave is obtained as a certain limit of cnoidal wavetrains. This results is extended here, in the context of the Kortewegde Vries equation.
