Remedios : stories of earth and iron from the history of Puertorriqueñas by Aurora Levins Morales( Book )

7 editions published between 1998 and 2002 in English and held by 494 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Replete with herbal lore and tales of heroines whose work and words have sustained generations, Remedios offers the curative history of the many women - and cultures - who have met at the crossroads of the island of Puerto Rico. Beginning with the First Mother in sub-Saharan Africa more than 200,000 years ago, Aurora Levins Morales takes us on a journey through time and around the globe." "Yet the nature of the healing narrative is not limited to the lives of others. Bearing witness to a much larger history of abuse and resistance by women and men, Levins Morales weaves in her own story of pain and healing, the horror of abuse, ameliorated through the restorative power of memory." "Enriched with explanations of the medicinal properties of herbs and foods such as rosemary, ginkgo, and banana, Remedios revives our connection to the forgotten lore of our grandmothers."--BOOK JACKET

Remedios : History as medicine story by Aurora Levins Morales( Book )

2 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Part II, Remedios, offers one model for such a healing process: the use of scholarly historical research and a rich tradition of storytelling to retell the history of Puerto Rican women as a conscious contribution to the creation of a culture of resistance, and toward the recovery and decolonization of collective memory. Remedios is a sequence of prose poetry vignettes that reframe the place of Puerto Rican women in both Puerto Rican and world history, revealing the complex web of social relations in which we have existed, and recognizing our agency in our own lives across time and geography. Reaching far beyond our borders, these stories trace our links with women in many places, tied to us by ancestry, culture and common threads of political and economic experience. Remedios is both a new and critical retelling of the history of Puerto Rican and related women, and an active interrogation of that history and its usefulness to contemporary Puerto Rican women
