Computerized literature searching : an orientation for the search requester by Emily Fabiano( Book )

7 editions published between 1979 and 1980 in English and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Developed to orient the information seeker to the computerized literature search process, this guide provides background information that will help the user facilitate the search interview and the formation of a search topic, enabling him or her to focus on personal search needs and not on the fundamentals of online searching. Major purposes for which researchers have made requests to retrieve online information are described, as are types of search objectives and instances in which a manual search may be effective. To aid the searcher in choosing the proper database, the differences between kinds of databases, their locations, and methods of determining their appropriateness are outlined. It is suggested that the searcher define his research problem by recognizing concepts and using a thesaurus. This guide also explains the principles of Boolean logic, presents a sample search, and considers such details as deciding the format of the output or citations requested from the system, estimating the cost of the search, and judging whether the turnaround time from search to receipt of information is affordable. In addition to samples of typical interview questions and a sample of a search topic form, a listing of indexing and abstracting sources is provided. (Fm)

Effects of reading stories on children's attitudes toward older adults by Emily Fabiano( Book )

2 editions published in 1977 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study investigated the effects of reading stories depicting older-adult characters on the attitudes of fourth-graders toward older adults. Attitudes were measured by means of a semantic-differential attitude scale constructed for this purpose. One hundred five students from five fourth-grade classes were randomly assigned to two experimental groups and one control group. The attitude scale was administered to all groups as a pretest. The first experimental group was exposed to five stories (reading silently while hearing the stories on tape) with positive, active older-adult characters. The stories were discussed with emphasis on the active-versus-passive roles of the older adult characters. The second group had the same exposure to the stories without any discussion following. The control group had no contact with the stories at all. Comparison of posttest scores and pretest scores indicated that the presentation of stories with older-adult characters, designed to influence attitudes, was not successful in effecting any significant change in fourth-graders' attitudes toward the older adult. The children's attitudes toward older adults appeared neutral or positive rather than negative. (Author/MKM)
