History of the Peloponnesian War by Thucydides( Book )

62 editions published between 1821 and 1931 in 6 languages and held by 278 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Written four hundred years before the birth of Christ, this detailed contemporary account of the long life-and-death struggle between Athens an Sparta stands an excellent chance of fulfilling its author's ambitious claim. Thucydides himself (c-460-400 B.C.) was an Athenian and achieved trhe rank of general in the earlier stages of the war. He applied thereafter a passion for accuracy and a contempt for myth and romance in compiling this factual record of a disastrous conflict

Decline and fall of Byzantium to the Ottoman Turks by Doukas( Book )

35 editions published between 1834 and 2012 in 6 languages and held by 191 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The author of this history was a member of the Byzantine Doukas family, a grandson of Michael Doukas, who had come to prominence in the civil wars of the fourteenth century, and possibly a remote descendant of the eleventh-century emperor Michael VII. His own first name and dates of birth and death are not known, but he seemed to have worked for a Genoese family or business, and after the fall of Constantinople took refuge on the island of Lesbos, then controlled by the Genoese Gattilusi dynasty. His history of the period 1341-1462, including the Ottoman conquest, survived in one manuscript: this 1834 edition by Immanuel Bekker provides, as well as a Latin translation of the original Greek text, a near-contemporary Italian version of unknown authorship discovered in a Venetian library by the historian Leopold Ranke, who supplied it to Bekker

Sextus Empiricus by Sextus( Book )

15 editions published between 1824 and 1842 in 4 languages and held by 179 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Sextus Empiricus (ca. AD 160-210), exponent of scepticism and critic of the Dogmatists, was a Greek physician and philosopher, pupil and successor of the medical sceptic Herodotus (not the historian) of Tarsus. He probably lived for years in Rome and possibly also in Alexandria and Athans. His three surviving works are 'Outlines of Pyrrhonism' (three books and the practical and ethical scepticism of Pyrrho of Elis, ca. 360-275 BC, as develped later, presenting also a case against the Dogmatists); Against the Dogmatistis' (five books dealing with the Logicians, Physicists, and Ethcists); and 'Against the professors' (six books: Grammarians, Rhetors, Geometers, Arithmeticians, Astrologers, and Musicians). These two latter works might be called a general criticism of professors of all arts and sciences. Sextus' work is a source for the history of thought especially because of his development and formulation of former sceptic doctrines

Georgii Pachymeris De Michaele et Andronico Palaeologis libri tredecim by George Pachymeres( Book )

29 editions published between 1835 and 1980 in 6 languages and held by 132 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This history of the reigns of the first two emperors of the Palaiologos Dynasty by George Pachymeres (1242-1310) was edited by the German scholar Immanuel Bekker (1785-1871) on the basis of the work of the French Jesuit, Pierre Poussines (1609-86), and published in two volumes in 1835. The family of Pachymeres, like the aristocratic Palaiologoi, had fled to the neighbouring empire of Nicaea (Iznik) after the capture of Constantinople by the Franks in 1204. Michael Palaiologos (1223-82) became leader of the armies in Nicaea in 1259; two years later he had driven the Latins from Constantinople and was crowned Emperor Michael VIII, with his two-year-old son Andronikos (1259-1332) as his co-ruler and heir. Pachymeres also wrote on music, rhetoric and philosophy, but is best remembered for this history of his own times. Volume 1 describes the life and reign of Michael Palaiologos
