"This book is concerned with new and more fruitful ways of thinking about man and his society which we have been developing within recent years, indicative of the new climate of opinion now emerging in science, philosophy, art, and especially literature. One expression of this reorientation in our thinking we are calling the psychocultural approach, because it utilizes the concepts and findings, the insights and understandings, as well as the methods, of psychiatry, psychoanalysis, and psychology, together with those coming from cultural anthropology and sociology. In terms of culture and personality, we may view the widespread social disorders and conflicts and also the prevalent unhappiness and personality difficulties of individuals as different expressions or symptoms of our disintegrating cultural traditions. This seemingly circular conception replaces the long accepted, but unresolvable dilemma of the individual versus society--and, like modern physics, locates the dynamics of social life in individuals, living in a social and cultural field which they themselves maintain. Perhaps the major gain from this new approach is that it provides a constructive substitute for the increasingly bitter polemics and apologetics and also the growing defeatism and "failure of nerve" of today. If we can see ourselves as carrying on the endless endeavor to develop a human way of life, we will not shrink from accepting the great privilege and immense responsibility of renewing our culture and reorientating our social order, as the task we and our children must undertake. For this task, we have the resources of these new concepts and insights and the guidance of our enduring aspirations toward a democratic social order, dedicated to human dignity and respect for the individual personality. For many years I have been concerned with the development of this psychocultural approach. These essays, written for different journals and on special occasions, present successive efforts to deal with the varied problems of this emerging synthesis of culture and personality. They are offered not as pronouncements but as invitations to new ways of thinking. While earlier exploratory statements have been elaborated and further clarified in later formulations, I hope they will be of value to students now entering this field and also to the general reader who is seeking illumination upon the contemporary scene"--Preface. "This lecture offers an introduction to the place, significance and underlying theory of projective methods in psychology, their relation to recent developments in scientific thinking and methodology and a brief description of the different kinds of projective procedures now in use. The lecture does not give any specific direction for using or interpreting projective results but rather provides what may be called the rationale of such methods. The first part discusses the growing use of projective methods in psychology and psychiatry and shows how they are predicated upon a psychocultural conception of the emergence of the personality and its dynamic operation. The second part describes recent developments in scientific concepts and methods, especially in physics and chemistry and medicine, as illustrative of the new climate of opinion we are now entering. The third part reviews various approaches to the study and diagnosis of personality by way of preface to' the more specific description of actual procedures. The fourth part outlines projective techniques and describes the five different varieties thus far developed, with interpretative comment upon the value and use of each variety. The fifth part discusses reliability and validity of projective, methods and the emergence of new criteria for assaying projective procedures. This monograph has been prepared to direct the attention of students toward recent developments in scientific thinking which have revolutionized physical science and offer immense possibilities for advancing psychology as soon as these new concepts and assumptions are understood and the new criteria and methodologies are accepted by psychologists. It is hoped that a reading of this lecture in print will stimulate further "explorations in personality" and also enlist a wider public awareness of what is taking place today in study and diagnosis of personality. Finally, this monograph is offered as a contribution to the further development of mental hygiene in education, industry and public administration by showing how better personnel selection may be achieved through the use of projective methods"--Préface. Heredity and the transactions the embryo enters into with its environment provide a biological parameter. "Understanding our own feelings and emotions is a vital concern of all of us. If we mean to guide our own actions, feelings and emotions are at the heart of our problem. If we need to guide the actions of others, they are a key to our problem. And if we are theorists pure and simple, hoping only to understand life, they are an unsolved problem. And what a welter of cross pressures and dark sayings surrounds it! Emotions must be eliminated for effective thinking, emotions must be controlled for social living--but emotions must be expressed for healthy development. Emotions must be examined physiologically--or psychologically. Emotions are organizing--or disorganizing. Emotions are centrally initiated--or are peripherally determined. These views are but illustrative of lines of emphasis which recur in discussions of the topic. Yet all this can be reconciled and understood if we follow the right lead. In the following pages, Lawrence K. Frank offers an analysis of the nature of the affective processes and provides a basis for integrating the wide variety of scientific and clinical findings. He starts with the mammalian heritage of man, elaborates and integrates the concept of homeostasis, and develops the transactional approach. In reviewing genetic development with this orientation, he reformulates the mechanisms of the unconscious, transforming them from the static and reified form descriptions so frequently give to them into truly dynamic aspects of the functioning of the organism in an understandable manner. He shows the link between repression, displacement, projection and physiological reactions preparing the organism for fight or flight. Further, his approach emphasizes the naturalness of emotional reactions and affective responses. We must live with such reactions and responses; and Frank, by providing a proper basis for understanding them, shows how we can integrate them effectively for more adequate social participation.
