in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
The manuscript text is combined with additional text and illustrations that have been clipped from a variety of printed sources. Assembled in scrapbook fashion, with printed matter mounted on blank leaves. Much of the manuscript text may be found in the article on lighthouses in v. 12 of "The Edinburgh encyclopaedia" (confirmed in American edition of 1832, though it likely also appeared in the first edition of 1830). The manuscript presents this text in a more disordered and unpolished state. While scribe 2 more or less continues the text of scribe 1, at least one passage written by scribe 1 is repeated by scribe 2 (see fol. 13v and fol. 57v), with evidence that additional repetition by scribe 2 was excluded from the present manuscript (note disconnect between catchword on fol. 57v and beginning of text on fol. 59r). A few of the illustrations through fol. 41 appear to have been captioned (and probably added) by scribe 1; some illustrations from fol. 42-67 appear to have been captioned (and probably added) by scribe 2. Additional printed matter mounted on fol. 68r-91r may have been added later still. The foot of fol. 49r bears an attribution to Francis Grose's "The antiquities of England and Wales." Text on fol. 50r-51v is transcribed from v. 27 of "The gentleman's magazine" (1757)
Address of Theodore N. Vail at annual banquet of the National geographic society, New Willard hotel, Washington, D.C., March 7, 1916 by Theodore Newton Vail( Book )

Hydrostaticks ... [etc.] by Hans De Veil( Book )
in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
A treatise on hydrostatics, followed by shorter sections on other subjects. The author seems to have submitted the entire manuscript to James Bate for review. The author's text appears on the rectos only, with Bate's comments written on the versos and his occasional annotations among the author's text. At the end is Bate's censuring review of De Veil's "An essay towards a solution of the horizontal moon" (the text of which does not appear in this manuscript). Bate's response to De Veil suggests that the author was seeking comments in preparation for a second edition of that work, the sole edition of which was published in 1725
