The future : six drivers of global change by Al Gore( Book )

26 editions published between 2013 and 2015 in 3 languages and held by 2,297 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The consequential age we are living in will be remembered as one of the great turning points in civilization. Once we turn, though, where will we be? That is the compelling question Al Gore sets out to answer by examining the drivers of global change, connecting the dots among the social, economic, and political forces shaping our present and future. A rising global consciousness is forcing people around the world, but especially Americans, to rethink their basic assumptions about how the world works, and, even more fundamentally, how it should and can work. Borders matter less than ever. Technology is constantly reordering the way we live, think, work, learn, love, pray, and play"--
American Earth : environmental writing since Thoreau( Book )

9 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 2,064 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As America and the world grapple with the consequences of global environmental change, the author, a writer and activist offers this anthology gathering the best and most significant American environmental writing from the last two centuries. "Each advance in environmental practice" in our nation's history, he observes in his introduction, "was preceded by a great book." In this work are the words that made a movement. Classics of the environmental imagination, the essays of Henry David Thoreau, John Muir, and John Burroughs; Aldo Leopold's A Sand County Almanac; Rachel Carson's Silent Spring, are set alongside an emerging activist movement, revealed by newly uncovered reports of pioneering campaigns for conservation, passages from landmark legal opinions and legislation, and searing protest speeches. Throughout, some of America's greatest and most impassioned writers take a turn toward nature, recognizing the fragility of our situation on earth and the urgency of the search for a sustainable way of life. The anthology includes essays on overpopulation, consumerism, energy policy, and the nature of "nature" join ecologists' memoirs and intimate sketches of the habitats of endangered species, as well as a detailed chronology of the environmental movement and American environmental history

This publication reports on the progress of the Clinton Administration's effort to reinvent the Federal government bureaucracy and how it operates and serves citizens. Part 1, "a Government that Makes Sense," describes the progress that reinventing government has made and reviews the context in which the initiative was launched including analysis of how the Federal government became too bureaucratic and why it failed to keep up with technological advances. Part 2, "Getting Results," describes how the reinventing effort has tried to get results rather than focus on rules through regulatory overhaul. It describes specific examples of regulatory simplification and creative responses to getting services to citizens more effectively. Part 3, "Putting Customers First," describes the effort to learn what those who use government agencies want and to change services to meet customer desires. Part 4, "Getting Our Money's Worth," describes how this initiative has worked to manage money and other assets well and save significantly toward reducing the federal deficit through eliminating unnecessary programs, improving purchasing, and holding agencies accountable. The concluding Part reflects on the place of trust and personal responsibility in good government. Appendixes contain information on the status of the recommendations, new recommendations, regulatory reform efforts, summary of savings, and executive and legislative actions taken. (Each chapter contains reference notes.) (Jb)
The assault on reason by Al Gore( Recording )

15 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 1,015 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"At the time George W. Bush ordered American forces to invade Iraq, 70 percent of Americans believed Saddam Hussein was linked to 9/11. Voters in Ohio, when asked by pollsters to list what stuck in their minds about the 2004 presidential campaign, most frequently named two Bush television ads that played to fears of terrorism. We live in an age when the 30-second television spot is the most powerful force shaping the electorate's thinking, and America is in the hands of an administration less interested than any previous administration in sharing the truth with the citizenry. Of even greater concern is this administration's disinterest in the process by which the truth is ascertained, the tenets of fact-based reasoning--first among them an embrace of open inquiry, in which unexpected and even inconvenient facts can lead to unexpected conclusions. How did we get here? Al Gore's goal is to explain how the public sphere itself has evolved into a place hospitable to reason's enemies ; to make us more aware of the forces at work on our own minds ; and to lead us to an understanding of what we can do, individually and collectively, to restore the rule of reason and safeguard our future. Drawing on a life's work in politics as well as on the work of experts across a broad range of disciplines, Al Gore gives us a farsighted and powerful manifesto for clear thinking."--Publisher's web site

Access America by National Performance Review (U.S.)( Book )

9 editions published in 1997 in English and German and held by 546 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

When the President asked me in 1993 to lead the reinvention of government, the first thing I did was start talking with front-line federal employees about what was broken and how to fix it. In agency offices and at the National Performance Review (NPR), inspired teams worked day and night through the summer of 1993 generating ideas. They got a lot of help from the best in business, as well as state and local reinventors. When the work was finished, we had 1,200 actions that I recommended to the President. He reviewed them, gave them his endorsement, and made a personal commitment. He said, "Wherever this report says, the President should, ' this President will." Among the 1,200 recommended actions was a set of imaginative proposals to make government work better and cost less by reengineering through information technology. The idea of reengineering through technology is critical. We didn't want to automate the old, worn processes of government. Information technology (IT) was and is the great enabler for reinvention. It allows us to rethink, in fundamental ways, how people work and how we serve customers
