Depression : theories and treatments : psychological, biological, and social perspectives by Arthur Schwartz( Book )

5 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 673 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Depression: Theories and Treatments presents a thorough overview of the major issues in the study and treatment of depression. In one volume it examines all the major theoretical, assessment, and treatment strategies, and based on the most recent research offers clear explanations of the psychological, biological, and cultural aspects of depression. Rather than favoring a particular treatment approach, the authors provide a balanced presentation with research-based indicators of the particular techniques or approaches to be used, including medications that have proven useful. A comprehensive, step-by-step assessment guide is included. Rich in cases and new findings, the volume concludes with a discussion of how gender, age, race, and socioeconomic status can be important factors in depression. Technical terms are explained and minitutorials are provided throughout so that the text is understandable to all readers

A tree grows in Brooklyn by Arthur Schwartz( Book )

2 editions published in 1951 in English and held by 393 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Play based on "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn": Francie Nolan, avid reader, penny-candy connoisseur, and adroit observer of human nature, has much to ponder in colorful, turn-of-the-century Brooklyn. She grows up with a sweet, tragic father, a severely realistic mother, and an aunt who gives her love too freely--to men, and to a brother who will always be the favored child. Francie learns early the meaning of hunger and the value of a penny. She is her father's child--romantic and hungry for beauty. But she is her mother's child, too--deeply practical and in constant need of truth. Like the Tree of Heaven that grows out of cement or through cellar gratings, resourceful Francie struggles against all odds to survive and thrive. Betty Smith's poignant, honest novel created a big stir when it was first published ... --Emilie Coulter at Amazon.com

The band wagon: Tony Hunter is a famous singer/dancer/movie star who is feeling washed up. But his old friends Lily and Les Martin have an idea for a funny little Broadway show and Tony agrees to do it. Things begin to get out of hand when bigshot 'artistic' director/producer/star Jeffrey Cordova joins the production. He proclaims it's a modernistic Faust and insists on hiring a prima ballerina, Gabrielle Gerard, to star opposite Tony. It's hate at first sight. Her jealous choreographer isn't helping matters. The show looks doomed, but romance, an epiphany, and a triumphant opening are waiting in the wings
