Activities for an interactive classroom by Jeffrey N Golub( Book )

3 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 402 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Focusing particularly on student writing, this book describes the principles of an interactive classroom and presents specific activities which adhere to those principles. Acknowledging that such classrooms require that the students feel comfortable with each other, the book details several activities that help to build a positive classroom climate. The book uses classroom vignettes to illustrate the characteristics of the interactive classroom--authentic communication; collaborative learning; and the teacher as designer and director of instructional activities, among them. Chapters in the book are: (1) Principles of an Interactive Classroom; (2) Establishing a Positive Classroom Climate; (3) Establishing a Classroom Community and Context for Writing; (4) Creative Writing Activities; (5) Descriptive Writing Activities; (6) Developing Voice and Tone; (7) Narrative Writing Activities; (8) Speaking of Literature; (9) Three Interactive Projects; (10) Computers and English Instruction; and (11) Talking on the Spur of the Modem. Making learning happen : strategies for an interactive classroom by Jeffrey N Golub( Book )

7 editions published between 2000 and 2002 in English and held by 327 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is a book about "conscious learning," the kind of learning that enables students to assess the current level and quality of their language performance and then work to improve that performance deliberately, enthusiastically, and with commitment. The book takes complex, sophisticated understandings and reworks them into ready-to-use smart activities to foster self reflection and self assessment. First, it describes and demonstrates instructional strategies that "make the invisible visible," that encourage students to reflect on their language performance, thus becoming consciously aware of the learning that has occurred. Next, it shows teachers how to restructure their classroom activities to engage students in every lesson, every project, every day. Two chapters of the book are devoted to interactive activities that develop students' speaking and listening skills and help them work productively and harmoniously in a small-group setting. The book also allows readers to listen in on the author's thinking, describing the structures and activities he uses in his own classroom and describing the process of putting them together in an actual lesson plan. Characteristics of students' classroom talk surrounding the assignment, production and evaluation of a writing task by Jeffrey N Golub( )

4 editions published between 1982 and 1983 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A study analyzed some of the characteristics of junior high students' oral communication behavior that accompanied the assignment, production, and evaluation of a writing task. It involved fieldwork in three junior high school English classes--first in a six-month pilot study and then in a year-long period of observation. Through direct participant observation and interviews with students, four functions of oral communication in written composition were identified. These functions reveal the following patterns or clusters of communication behaviors: (1) expressing self through language, (2) seeking confirmation through validation of writing, (3) evaluating one's own writing, and (4) assimilating the writing task to one's own understanding. An evaluative theme appeared in many of the patterns of students' classroom talk and involved their seeking an audience and feedback for their writing. Another characteristic was their sensitivity toward their language use. Often an interaction occurred between students' concern for evaluation and their sensitivity to language use. In such instances, the students encountered a dilemma. To seek an audience and feedback for one's writing required that one allow the writing to become the focus of another person's attention and judgement. Other students, also faced with a desire to share their communication effort but mindful of the self-revelatory nature of their work, took pains to direct their audience's attention to specific parts of the writing. Unfortunately, there appears to be a discrepancy between the frequency and spontaneity of students' sharing behavior and the lack of provision for, or emphasis of, this dimension in current composition materials.
