Gaddafi's harem by Annick Cojean( Book )

40 editions published between 2012 and 2015 in 9 languages and held by 1,193 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Soraya was just fifteen, a schoolgirl in the coastal town of Sirte, when she was given the honor of presenting a bouquet of flowers to Colonel Gaddafi, the Guide, on a visit he was making to her school the following week. This one meeting--a presentation of flowers, a pat on the head from Gaddafi--changed Soraya's life forever. Soon afterwards, she was summoned to Bab al-Azizia, Gaddafi's palatial compound near Tripoli, where she joined a number of young women who were violently abused, raped and degraded by Gaddafi. Heartwrenchingly tragic but ultimately redemptive, Soraya's story is the first one of many that are just now beginning to be heard. But sex and rape remain the highest taboo in Libya, and women like Soraya (whose identity is protected by a pseudonym here) risk being disowned or even killed by their dishonored family members. In Gaddafi's Harem, an instant bestseller on publication in France, where it has already sold more than 100,000 copies in hardcover, Le Monde special correspondent Annick Cojean gives a voice to Soraya's story, and supplements her investigation into Gaddafi's abuses of power through interviews with people who knew Soraya, as well as with other women who were abused by Gaddafi, and those who were involved with his regime, including a driver who ferried women to the compound, and Gaddafi's former Chief of Security. Gaddafi's Harem is an astonishing portrait of the essence of dictatorship: how power gone unchecked can wreak havoc on the most intensely personal level, as well as a document of great significance to the new Libya

Gaddafi's harem : the shocking true story of Gaddafi's secret sex slaves by Annick Cojean( Book )

3 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 57 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Gaddafi's Harem is the shocking true story of a schoolgirl's abduction into Colonel Gaddafi's secret harem of sex slaves. Award-winning French journalist Annick Cojean has given a voice to the horrific and moving story of Soraya, a 15-year-old girl who was summoned to Gaddafi's palatial compound near Tripoli in Libya after the dictator 'chose' her on one of his school visits. There she joined dozens of young women who were systematically abused, raped and degraded by Gaddafi. In public, the women were disguised as Gaddafi's security personnel. In private, they were confined to basement apartments, on hand for the depraved and violent impulses of one of the 20th century's most malevolent dictators."--Publisher's description

1 edition published in 2008 in French and held by 34 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Marc Riboud : 50 years of photography by Marc Riboud( Book )

4 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 28 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"For the past fifty years, Marc Riboud has traveled the world recording the harmony of landscapes and the beauty in faces in Angkor, Huang-Shan, Vietnam, Istanbul, India, Bangladesh, New York and China. Riboud captures images of history in the making alongside those of everyday life. From a painter balanced like a dancer on the metal girders of the Eiffel Tower to a young girl facing down a rank of riflemen in protest of the Vietnam war, Riboud's photographs reveal a deep passion for seeing, an intrinsic compassion for the human struggle, and an intense and insatiable desire to understand and to comprehend. While many of his photographs depict the anguish of war, others catch the evanescent delight of a swim in a sun-dappled river or children learning to whistle in a Shanghai street." "This retrospective book - which includes Riboud's most famous photographs as well as unpublished vintage prints from Leeds in 1954, from Africa, and from Europe - is the first to span his entire career."--Jacket

Simone Veil : La loi d'une femme by Caroline Huppert( Visual )

2 editions published in 2008 in French and held by 21 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Biographie documentaire.
